cooling problems
ok i am alittle new to all of this. i have a 72 cheyenne with a 95 tbi crate motor and i cant seem to keep it cool. i have changed the thermostat, the water pump, put a 5 core radiator in. any ideas?

Assume you verified the over heat problem with an IR gun. These old gauges can not be trusted. Verifiy and let us know what the temp is running. Several things to check: make sure the lower hose is not suctioning closed, if you have a fan clutch is it working (should be able to hear it roar when it locks up during hot conditions). What water pump did you out in it, new, rebuilt, what brand?

Do you have a fan shroud? What type of fan? When does it run hot -- when idling, at low speeds, at highway speeds... or always? Do you know if your gauge is accurate? Does the truck have the right pressure cap? Do you have 50/50 antifreeze mix in it?

when i want to know for sure i put a thermometer in the coolant to verify temp

Are you running the serpentine system or the old v-belt. I maybe wrong, but I think the '95 fan/water pump runs the opposite of the older 350s. I wonder if the water pump is running in the wrong direction.
I may be off base, but it is something to check.

You didn't by chance put a water pump in for a serpentine system did you? They run backwards from a v-belt pump.

My thoughts, either wrong water pump (spinning wrong way) OR if you are using the serpentine belt system, are you using the stock fan? If so, the fan is spinning backwards. You would need a fan from a late model truck that was a reverse pitch.
