Back Again After A Few Years

Returning former member here. I getting my 72 GMC back on the road after 33 years. Bought it in 1973 and parked it in the back of my garage in 1990 and now that I'm retired finally have the time to get it running again. Drove it for the first time this week and it felt great! I have lots of questions so will be posting them in the 67-72 forum. Happy to answer any questions any of you may have. I'm a clueless old guy so please excuse any computer clumsiness.

Re: Back Again After A Few Years

Hi!

What a beauty.

Questions… yes a couple…

Is that a shortbed, big block, sierra grande?

Is it original paint?

How many miles on it?

Can we see the SPID?

Thanks for sharing!

Re: Back Again After A Few Years

Yes, it's a short bed 115" WB, 402 big block, Sierra Grande. I repainted it in 1981. Worked in a body shop at the time and painted it with Dupont Imron. It has some rust issues, but I drove it through 17 Wisconsin winters so not surprising. It has 138k original miles. SPID below. Interesting that it lists Cheyenne Super Equip when it's a Sierra Grande. The Cragar SS wheels were on it when I bought it. The topper is an Ary-Way Campers fiberglass model that I purchased in 1973 shortly after purchasing the truck. The roof rack is from a Ford LTD wagon that I shortened to fit back in the day. The seat is original. From day one, it was covered with clear plastic seat covers that were hot and sticky in summer and cold in winter. Guys said that all I was doing was saving the seats for the next owner and I should just enjoy them. Well, I'm that "next owner" and now I'm finally getting to enjoy them :-) I've spent the last 6 months cleaning everything, going through the mechanicals and changing fluids to get it back on the road. Thanks for asking!

Wow what a special truck, and cool you've had it for so long. I agree on the seat, use it! What a beauty.

Re: Back Again After A Few Years

Great truck & story! Are those auxiliary tanks on both sides?

Re: Back Again After A Few Years

Yes, I made the aux tanks back in the mid 70's when the gas supply was spotty. Each side holds 16 gal. Bought the control valve at J.C. Whitney but had to make my own tanks as no one made tanks for a SB 115" WB.
