Very smart finished there Ken.

You are right, sometimes these jobs just grow out of proportion, but they are needed.

No no please don't say that! I would go out of my mind if my truck ended up in paint jail.

Luckily this place has one dedicated side to restorations and they have done some trucks for C10/Club members before, so I'm optimistically hopeful. The shop owner is a C10 guy himself and the pic below is his truck.

Besides, come hell or high water I'm moving out of state by year end and that truck is coming with me, finished or not!

Last pic taken of my truck before the paint and body prep. Goodbye faux patina. She'll be coming home from her makeover in a nice coat of copper-brown color with a white roof.

Re: Ken's 1966 C10 Short Fleetside build

Time to post some meaningful updates (finally).

The truck is getting close to completion in regards to paint and body. Now that I look at the paint combo it reminds of a nice malty red ale with a foam head. Cheers!

Here's a video of Red Ale, this one you can see the interior which was sprayed yesterday. Sorry, couldn't figure out how to get the video to play so here's a link to it on my Instagram.

Re: Ken's 1966 C10 Short Fleetside build

Thanks I'm super pleased with the colors. I spent months looking for the color that seemed to only exist in my imagination and finally happened across a car at a show that had something similar. I'm sure the Chevy truck purists will not approve of this non-traditional color but I wasn't going for original. This truck build is purely for me and my vision of what I want to drive around daily.

Really excited to get my home brewed Red Ale truck out of paint and finish up the other details I have in mind for it.

Stay tuned!

Re: Ken's 1966 C10 Short Fleetside build

A bit more progress on the truck today. Doors and back window went on. The original windshield turned out to have some scratches and imperfections so I figured might as well get a new one instead which should arrive tomorrow.

It's getting so close I can taste it!

Love the new colors. What are your plans for the interior? Still planning to move out of Cali at the end of the year?

Thanks! The interior has an original fawn bench and the cover is the 64-65 pattern. Unfortunately I don't think it matches that well with the richer tone of the color I selected. I have 2 options; purchase another aftermarket cover that matches better, or go with all new seats ($$$). Carpet will be black. I'm working a trade with another member here for his Grant mahogany steering wheel. Lastly for the interior I need to pick up a stereo but on the fence between RetroSound and Classic Autosound.

Other plans include having the bed coated with Line-X since it already has a steel bed floor, and next week the new seals will go in for the side windows and wind wings.

Still moving out of Cali and I've been working on migrating my business to the new location in Tampa.

Re: Ken's 1966 C10 Short Fleetside build

My Red Ale truck is finally home from the paint shop.

Of course this wasn't without incident, the P/S pump blew up before I could drive it out so just had it towed home Like I always say, if it's not one thing its my truck!

Re: Hit a snag on my way to completing my build

Slight setback, what I thought was a bad p/s pump is not! After going through the whole process of pulling the pump, replacing, flush and bleed, the power steering still does not work! Turning the wheel to each left and right stop blows the fluid back out from under the cap and the fluid starts to boil just trying to work the wheel back and forth a few times (I have the burn and missing skin to prove it).

ARRRGH!

Next step is to replace the p/s gear box. It sucks because the box looks fairly new but it is the only piece left in the puzzle that could cause this. I just hope the mid-70's gear box I ordered is correct since this is a conversion that was put in by the previous owner.

Re: Ken's 1966 C10 Short Fleetside build

Small update. The P/S gearbox came in so just need to spend some time getting that in.

With any luck I will get around to the following this holiday weekend:
- 3 point seat belts
- Carpet
- Sun visors
- Steering wheel
- Window channels and felts
- Drive!!!

Okay... if I get half that done I'll be surprised, but I figure aim high!

Ha no only partially.

- Steering wheel installed, but then found the bearing in the column is bad.
- Window channels done on passenger side.
- Carpet laid out and trimmed, still need to glue and reinstall the seat.
- Seat belts installed but then realized they sent me 2 different styles (different ends, its going to bug me).

I was under my truck and got the hoses off the P/S box and pulled the pitman arm, when it started pouring rain. The truck is backed into my garage but because of other things inside there is no room to work so I'm laying out into the driveway trying to work under the frontend. Needless to say the weather this weekend put a halt to the gearbox removal.

Also because of the tight space I am only able to work from the passenger side, which is why only half the door window channels got done. With the steering pitman arm off and on jack stands I couldn't roll it out to get at the drivers side.

Re: Ken's 1966 C10 Short Fleetside "Red Ale"

Replacement seat belt arrived, yay!

Had some good weather Saturday so I finished installing the P/S gearbox.

Went to the Pomona Swapmeet this weekend and picked up a few things.
  1. New RetroSound Hermosa radio and speaker kick panels.
  2. Two 15" 5 lug rims for the rear when I replace the axles.
  3. Transmission dust cover.

This coming weekend the plan is to:
- Mount some used tires on those two 5 lug wheels.*
- Swap out the rear axles for a new set of 5 lugs.
- Finish ironing out the carpet. The molded carpet from TrimParts is horribly wrinkled and not a perfect fit.
- Put up the christmas lights on the house.
Guess which of the above is guaranteed to get finished

* The 15" wheels and used tires are temporary so I can finish up the axle swap and keep rolling until my new wheels arrive. I have a set of new Esajian Nitro billet wheels being made for me that should be done in a couple of weeks.

Merry Christmas to me!

Re: Ken's 1966 C10 Short Fleetside build

Got some time today to roll out of the garage and do some driving. The picture looks a lot darker because it was overcast out today.

Sadly upon arriving home the electric fuel pump began hemorrhaging all over the driveway. Found that the fitting somehow worked its way out of the plastic casing on the output side. This pump is one of those Mr. Gasket pumps and it probably has less than 500 miles on it. Since it was already getting dark I ran to the parts store and just picked up the same pump, but proably need to find something more reliable going forward. After getting bathed in approx 3 gallons of gas I got it replaced and running again.

Re: Ken's 1966 C10 Short Fleetside build

Thanks chief it's nowhere near the quality frame-off restore you have going on (which is looking great BTW) but I'm real happy with the progress considering I did just about everything myself. This will be my daily driver after I move to Tampa in the new year and just hoping I can maintain that "new paint look" for a little while.

Still on my project list, but some will need to wait until after the move.
- New wheels, should be ready in a couple weeks.
- Swap the rear axles to 5 lug.
- Install the new adjustable panhard bar.
- Swap out the front springs and install the drop spindles.
- Line-x the bed which was previously changed to a steel bed floor by PO.
- Install a Vintage Air (will have to wait until after the move).
