New member 67 GMC SB wideside 4x4

Hello everyone,
I'm new to this site. I'm just in the process of purchasing 67 GMC 1/2 ton short bed fleetside 4x4.I've started to research the truck and it is checking out to be a true original unmolested survivor. I've decoded the Vin. # using a decoder built on this site and it matches the trucks current set-up and also matches the build sheet in the seat back coils right down to the original paint, optional v6, and the wood bed. I was trying to research production #s and the site I came across said 1046 units built in 1967. My question is this;
1) is that #a combined total of both Chevy and GMC trucks built.
2) if its a combination of both does anybody know the breakdown of that number how many are Chevrolet versus GMC Trucks.
3)The truck is a manual 4 speed with locking front hubs that look to be original Is their anywhere I could find pictures of original locking 1/2 ton hubs?
4) Is their a VIN # stamped in the frame if so where would it be located?
Thanks for any help you can provide.

Did you say your truck has a V6 in it? I don't believe they ever produced this truck with that engine configuration. Can you post a pic of the SPID label from inside the glovebox door? That will truly tell us how your truck came from the factory.

I don't have a pick of that label. I did attach vin # and the second digit is M=v6 the motor. It is a 305 V6 oil bath air cleaner GMC valve covers.
Thanks

Re: New member 67 GMC SB wideside 4x4

1967 GMC's often didn't have a SPID label, but if the VIN matches the build sheet that's all you need. 'KM' in the VIN means V-6 4X4, no question. If there is a VIN stamped on the frame it would likely be on the top of the driver's side rail just ahead of or under the cab. I think that production figure you have would be for GMC's only, GMC and Chevy were separate divisions and there wouldn't be any reason to combine production totals.

For GMC V-6 information, look here:

www.6066gmcclub.com

Sounds like a great truck, good luck with it!

Welcome, Arcticman. That is a cool truck you found. I may be wrong, but I think production figures that are available are for Chevy Trucks and there are no records on GMC. Due to a fire, I think. It's a fact that records would be entirely separate due to being separate divisions.

Bob, can you elaborate on often didn’t have a SPID? I’ve never heard that - didn’t often, as in, sometimes they did and sometimes they didn’t? I assumed, maybe incorrectly, that GMC SPIDs started in 66 like chevs, and once started, they always would have had them. Interested to hear the difference - I am honestly in the dark on some GMC details, always good to learn a little more. Thanks.

They did, all the way to '69 as an option, and then special order through '72.

To add to that, it is believed that Chevrolet production was 3:1 to 4:1 compared to GMC. With the rarer models, it's harder to tell, did GM really only build 250-300 GMC SWB fleet 4x4s, or since the number was so low, did GMC actually sell +/- 1,000 units as well?

As stated, we will never know. It's frustrating. I have a 65 Mustang and Ford destroyed all records from 65/66 but Kevin Marti was able to purchase/save all of the 67+ records and you can literally get a "marti report" with just about any information you could ever want about your 67+ mustang... 65/66, you're not finding out squat. Same for 67-72 GMC trucks, we just don't know.

Cool find. Should have Dana 44’s in both ends as well. 30 years ago I was looking at a 67 GMC short step 4x4 with SM420 and the V6. Wish I had bought that one. Hope you get it and will provide pics!

For the most part, a '67 GMC will not have a SPID. That is the rule of thumb, yet some very few have shown up with one. Rhyme or reason? I could probably come up with a rhyme but not a reason.

I once had a GMC

A Camper Cruiser 67

Was a favorite to me

But things as it be

Old truck is now way up in heaven.
.....................

Had plans that just never happened

Condition just turned into crappened

Big City said get rid

There it went with no SPID

And my nosy neighbors all stood there clappin'

Re: New member 67 GMC SB wideside 4x4

Thanks everyone for your responses. I should have possession of the truck on the 1st of March and will post some picks. I'm sure I will be asking a lot more questions as I'm not very familiar with GM trucks. The owner did mention there was a label in the glove box but I was busy looking at the build sheet and forgot to take a photo. I cant confirm at this time if its a spid but it sounds like it is.
My main point with the production #s was. How rare is the truck? maybe only 200-300 produced? if the ratio of cheverlet to GMC was even 2 to1 that would make it a very small #.
the Build sheet has code #s is there any info on what those codes mean?
the build sheet is behind the coil springs so some info is only partialy visible
Thanks again for your help

Hey, arcticman, is that the rig I saw pop up on Craigslist for the last month or so? I thought it was pretty cool but pics looked like a tree had fallen on it. Dented up roof and hood? Price seemed high for that but prob left room for negotiation! Good luck. You will find a bunch of great information here and really helpful folks. Welcome!

I’m in Fairbanks. Maybe we can get together ad talk GMCs sometime.

I can't say I have ever seen a '67 GMC with a SPID label, my truck included (purchased from original owner). My understanding is some of the late production '67 GMC's did, and I believe someone posted a picture of a '67 GMC SPID on this forum once.

Re: New member 67 GMC SB wideside 4x4

I parted out a 67 GMC with a SPID a while back and still have the glovebox door. 1046 was the Chevy production numbers only so yes the GMC’s were only a fraction of that number so I’d say the 2-300 number is probably a pretty good guess. I’ve been on the board for 5 years or so and have only ever seen a picture of one other 67 GMC short box k10. My 67 GMC 4x4 has a KE vin and it’s the only one of those I’ve ever seen. The large majority of these came with the V6.

arcticman I'm curious to hear more about your truck to. I also have a 1967 GMC Shortbox 4x4. Came factory with V6/4 speed, buddy buckets, speed warning buzzer and a posi. The V6 was swapped out with a 350 years ago according to the previous owner. It does not have the SPID in the glove box. Not sure if it had one or if it was removed

Re: New member 67 GMC SB wideside 4x4

gm destroyed the records after a lawsuit where the media needed to dramatise the fire hazard of side tanks buy attaching squibs to them and igniting them just as the impact occured.

the news media typical of thier spin control tactics demanded ALL of GM's records. GM was forced to comply at thier own expense. The records were never actually used but the risk was clearly there. statistical evidence of wrong doing vs actual evidence...GM realised it was only a matter of time before somebody sued them and won. so imeadeatly after that lawsuit the records were destroyed.

the news media won in the long run. And we among many interest groups lost out.

It was the pontiac records that were lost, not so much by fire itself but by water damage caused in the effort to put the fire out.

please remember that origonal trucks are few and far between so please document with images every aspect of your truck before you chop cut and lower it and add an LSx and 20's

Re: New member 67 GMC SB wideside 4x4

Does it have 15s or the optional 16" wheels/tires? '67 was the lowest production of 67-72s and all SWB 4wds, either bed Chevy/GMC, are some of the lowest production models. Break out Widesides from Fendersides and you'd be in the lower hundreds. GM kept no statistics on how options, but figuring in less common options can make it all the more rare. Fancy 4wds were slowly coming around, but '67 was only a small step farther into it than previous years
