1984 Chevy Sno Chaser
The 1984 Chevrolet Sno Chaser is amongst the rarest of Chevrolet pickups, and only available in red with golden stripes. It was sold exclusively in northern states where the climate is colder and the roads could get icy. There's a reason why snow tires and all-wheel drive were standard
Around only 2500 made and some say there was a GMC version

X2. Me either.
I wish they would have marketed them in California. Although at the time I probably (surely) couldn't have afforded one. Plenty of people buy off road vehicles and never take them off road. I know because I'm one of them. I drive my Jeep to the liquor store.

Re: 1984 Chevy Sno Chaser
I like the ]83/'84s best out of the late square bodies because I like the grille the best. I've never gone for factory dress-up package jobs, though. A cool one for those who want off the shelf turn-key make payment trucks I guess. I forget what that chunk of fiberglass was called (Cab extender?) that was a trend in the '80s, but I bet it really helps the truck get through that snow! . Did GM actually produce these or were they a deal with a conversion company you could purchase and finance through the dealership? You know, like the vans and other trucks like (around here) the Rocky Ridge trucks I see on new car lots that are already lifted with other changes? I see Rocky Ridge Jeeps, too. I know GM never offered a chrome step bumper back then

Dealer group option? I know here in Utah the mid-70s to mid-80s you could buy a UFO Cutlass - UFO stood for Utah's Fantastic Olds, and it was a special trim package that included UFO badges on the B pillar.

Re: 1984 Chevy Sno Chaser
I like it, now, too. I like a lot of things in time that I didn't like when new. I removed the 4x4 stickers off my '92 K3500 while they were still fresh. It's the dual headlamp '83/'84 Chevys that I like also. I like the center trim running through the lamps full width, narrower, and body color (except this pkg). I wonder how they came up with using dark grey that is nowhere else on the truck. Was black or gold too much? Red would have looked fine. I have known about these trucks and I'm sure most of the square body guys as well. I can't say I ever saw one on the road. May be they weren't offered in this region. Those cab extenders were real popular in PA, not far up the road. There was a sundowner or Sunchaser as well (IIRC)
Larry, did you ever see the '84 Chevy I had?

Re: 1984 Chevy Sno Chaser
I guess they were trying to make a pickup look like an El Camino ???
My pickups have all been work trucks except for the ones with some sort of camper on the back. Some went through different incarnations. Mostly my "old" (no so old, then) 73 K/20 had stakes taller than the cab with 1x sideboards and front. I could load it with blocked firewood up to cab height, or small logs above the cab and sticking out over it. For my 1980, I built a big plywood box to sit across behind the cab and I had stakes in the front with a cross piece to carry a canoe angled up in the front. Then I bought the Cat and carried a 55 gallon drum of diesel along with a bunch of other junk. My current wood/trash pickup has 2x2 stakes in all the pockets, spare mounted ahead of wheel well on driver side, and the old grain drill chain saw box clamped in lengthwise just inside the wheel well on the passenger side. That leaves a pocket for gas/oil jugs, tow chain, 4-way, etc. and my hi-lift jack is tied up to the front stake on the driver side. Everything there has a purpose and a place that is more or less accessible. The "new" pickup we have now I guess is the slickest thing I've ever had, with the aerodynamic Leer topper. It almost looks too nice for an old redneck like me

Apparently I was wrong. It was sundancer and was 2wd. [QUOTE=GOPAPA;8780318]I think so .. that was a lumber hauling work truck for sure..

Re: 1984 Chevy Sno Chaser
I think the Sundancer (I was wrong, too) was yellow with dark grey lower body. I'm stuck with Bing at the moment and, being lame as it is, I can't come up with a picture

Isn't there a Sun Dancer for sale here on the board? I recall seeing a thread, and then an ad.

Re: 1984 Chevy Sno Chaser
This truck must have been the inspiration for the Chevy Avalanche and the Caddy version.
1984 GMC grills are rare as hen's teeth. No one makes them. |

Re: 1984 Chevy Sno Chaser
I'd feel funny driving one around here right now. Been in the 90s for weeks. I'd expect people pulling next to me "Hey buddy, I think you're lost"

Re: 1984 Chevy Sno Chaser
We used to call any of them there cab extension thingy's a 'Racerback' although I am sure that is probably a specific model from Lund or something.
I have always liked the little sleeper cap as a bed accessory. Used to see them everywhere in the 80s and 90s but hard to find these days. |
