Valve cover ventilation

Recently got my 72 Jimmy and had a question about the valve covers. One side is vented to the intake. The other side has the oil fill cap and an open spot that looks like it had a breather valve until recently. Should I look to put in a new breather or can I just cap it shut? Didn't know if both sides need to be vented.

Welcome to the site! WE LOVE PICS! So get some to us to see what you are dealing with. One valve cover should have a PCV valve and a hose going to the base of your carb and the other side should have a breather tube going to your air filter. This PCV is under constant vacuum from your engine when it's running and it evacuates your crankcase of unwanted fumes through your fuel mixture. It reburns the fumes as part of the fuel mixture entering your engine thus passing the bad fumes down through your tailpipe. And YES you should have this system in working order!

First time trying to post pictures, we'll see how this goes. Jimmy is at the body shop right now, these are the best I have at the moment. Really appreciate the input.

Oh, and on the driver side, the port in the back that is hard to see is just an oil fill cap, no ventilation.

Driver side looks correct but passenger side should go back to air cleaner. My guess is the previous owner did not correctly reattach when they put on that chrome air filter. You may find a boss on the bottom plate of the filter where this hose is supposed to go. Right now it is just sucking in atmosphere and anything in it. Bugs dirt sand etc.

My 72 had oil fill left front, left rear vent spark arrestor to air cleaner spacer/ tower, right side front vent to Carb base and on to charcoal canister, left rear tall filler tube.
