Re: 68 shortbed stepside stripper truck build

Got it out today and figured I’d post some current pictures.

I hit a lot of setbacks and almost gave up on this thing a few times since starting this project. I’m glad I didn’t. Just out farting around today I rolled into the throttle a bit while going about 30mph. It jumped right into boost and started spinning the tires. I wasn’t ready and almost pooped myself. Lol

Wow! This is a great looking truck. Super clean and very well executed.

nicely done!

You mention spinning the tires and I have no doubt about that, just curious how the traction control is working or if there's still work to be done?

Also, I'm not familiar with Pro EFI, are you using their display in the dash? Very clean setup all the way around

This is a sweet ride! Your engine setup looks very similar to my GMC and the tire spinning antics sound pretty familiar to me as well

Traction control is not currently active. The truck has yet to spend time with a tuner for a proper tune. That is coming on Sept 18th.

I have taken a few logs while driving… the other day I was riding down a nicely paved country road and rolled into the throttle again. Again, the tires cut loose and left some nice straight black lines. When I looked at the log I saw that I made 6lbs of boost which the computer said made approximately 560 crank hp. At that time the front wheels were doing about 55 and the rear wheels were doing about 75. So the computer sees it and knows the tires are spinning, but doesn’t know what to do about it. That is where a tuner will come in.

My dash is a RacePak IQ3S display in a Classic Dash surround. If I had it to do over I would not use the RacePak. There are multiple better options out there these days and I don’t care for RacePak support.

Re: 68 shortbed stepside stripper truck build

Our trucks seem to have a bunch of similarities, but yours is just way more refined looking!

What air conditioner setup are you using? I couldn't see anything about it in the build, maybe I just missed that part.

It seems as though very few of us 67-72 guys are brave/dumb enough to have gone to the turbos, I saw exactly one at the C10 Nationals in Salt Lake City this past summer. I also have yet to see anything over 6 lbs of boost driving around, but that lights up the tires through 2nd and 3rd. Tons of fun!

My AC is basically all vintage AC but I made my own lines and used a factory low mount GM compressor. It blows 40 degree air even when it’s extremely hot outside. It may be possible to get a little colder with some freon quantity tuning… I had to guess at that since I didn’t use their compressor and lines.

Re: 68 shortbed stepside stripper truck build

So the truck has been tuned now. It makes 700whp at 13psi on 93 octane pump gas and 840whp at 16psi on E85 ethanol fuel.

If anyone wants to see/follow it on instagram here is the link:

Re: 68 shortbed stepside stripper truck build

Impressive numbers on the dyno! Pretty much what I've been told to expect with a 7875, and the increase with the E85 was a little better than expected. Crazy how much power a "little" turbo and a basic engine will make nowadays while being totally streetable.

Re: 68 shortbed stepside stripper truck build

It makes these kind of marks really easy now even on the lowest boost setting.

I can have fun with this. Lol
