Oldsmobile 442 Motor Swap?

Hi Folks,

Many issues with my '68 327 lead me to start thinking about a new motor (it almost burns more oil than gas). I know I could rebuild the 327, but I think we all know it's just too small for these heavy trucks.

I love the idea of a big block. Has anyone ever swapped this engine in a C10?

It would, of course need a rebuild, but is this a good idea for a first engine build? Is it vastly different than a BBC? Is it much more expensive than a Chevy? I just think it would be totally different compared to what you normally see. There is also a 454 BBC for about the same price. Is the Olds just stupid?

About 50% more expensive to build than a Chevy for similar power levels. Limited amount of suppliers for go-fast goodies.
Will not bolt to your trans. If you are running a manual then you will pay bucks for the BOP (Buick Olds Pontiac) pattern bell housing. Auto, TH400/350's are relatively easy to come by.
Will not directly bolt to your motor stands. Custom motor mounts needed, or at least repositioned.
Not more powerful than BBC and less top end. If you are looking for pure torque 472/500 Cad is better option.
I have seen a torque built Olds 455 in a C30 tow truck. But the guy was a full time mechanic, the motor came out of a rolled car so basically free, and it was his back up wrecker while his K30 454 truck was getting totally redone.

Can it be done, yes, if you want to dare to be different, fine. But it's not a drop in and go thing.

I love the Olds 455 (I never had a 400) and I've put one in a Chevy. Yes, it can be done; it will definitely be more expensive. Mine was really fun to drive and I loved it except for the fuel mileage. If you want something different and you're up to the challenge, go for it. BUT...

What makes you think the 327 is too small for your truck? I had a 64 C10 with a 283 and it moved just fine. Now, if you really just want to spend more money or plan to do a lot of towing, or you just want bragging rights the 454 might be the thing for you. But a properly built SBC is going to move your truck around smartly, and it's going to cost less to build and operate.

I have a 402 bbc in my 67 K10 and a 455 in my 70 olds 442. The 455 boast 500 ft lbs of torque at I think 3200 rpm -- stock 360 hp cam which has lope and only carries 11 inches of vacuum at idle ---- power brakes will creep a small amount. A 70 442 weighs about 3800 lbs similar to a c10. I put an od auto trans in the 442 and I like it. As a driver the bbc and 455 want another gear.

If you have the capability -- I think the 455 olds would be a good ride but not for commuting everyday. Both of my engines use 93 octane and like gas ---- both have 700r4's and I like them as they are.

I have a BOP 400th from a pontiac - will trade but is a little far.

Yours being a 68 --it could have a large journal 327 similar to a z28 302 block in 68.
