Re: 1962 Grumman Olson Project

when using fiberglass i use fabric for shape. Shape the card board so that you can pull fabric across it and make the shape you want. Mesh can be used to help form it as well or wooden dowels etc. YOu can then stretch fabric across it, stape it down, then resin coat it. This will harden and give you your form to gladd over. Just remember, if you dont want it stuck to your fiberglass, cover it in painters tape.

Re: 1962 Grumman Olson Project

Spent a little time on the Van this weekend.

Started the roof paint.

Got the side decal out for pricing.

Hope to get some drive time on this project over summer.

Re: 1962 Grumman Olson Project

Got some vinyl put on the side. Its officially a shop vehicle... ha. Or at least a hobby shop vehicle.

Starting to come together. Hope to get a main street cruise out of this ride soon.

Re: 1962 Grumman Olson Project

A little bit of progress on the van this past week.

I went out to the local wrecking yard and found some flush mount headlight buckets out of an old Fargo step van. Got them cleaned up, painted and mounted. Even had the rings with them... score. They need a good cleaning and shine... I will eventually get to that.

They where a little off combined with some old metal reaction so I ended up using commercial adhesive to put them in. I plan on laminating some aluminum behind them so that they are screwed in as well.

I also got my transmission cooler mounted.

Re: 1962 Grumman Olson Project

I got some new wheels this week to get rid of the two piece 18's.

Ideally I really wanted a larger diameter wheel and actively searched for 19.5's... I found them but could not justify the price. I like to budget build.

With that in mind I went on the classifieds and found some 16's. I mounted them on the van. I think they will be alright.

Picture them sanded and painted gloss black.....

Because of the new wheels I had to change the front wheel studs. That is a young mans game... or at least I feel.

Anyway I got them in.

Re: 1962 Grumman Olson Project

After having the smaller wheels on I kept looking at the crappy looking undercoat that had been sprayed in the wheel wells over the years.

I did not like it. I spent this afternoon heating and scraping it off. I then go ambitious and put some gloss black to it.

Re: 1962 Grumman Olson Project

While I had the paint out I freshened up the engine bay.

I also got some paint on my pipes. As you will see the tips are 5" and the pipes are 2 3/4. My cousin welded in the ends of both 5" adapters and then plasma cut out for the 2 3/4 pipes and welded it all up.

I had the tips sitting here already, as previously mentioned, budget build... ha.

Re: 1962 Grumman Olson Project

In the past week or so I also got the marker lights and tail lights on and all soldered up.

That part of the wiring is complete.

A little more done to the van. All lights are now wired and working.

Turn signals, head lights and brake lights are functional.

Getting closer...
