power steering questions/help

I'm looking to put power steering in my '70 C/10 with a 307. What pump unit should I be looking for? Also, I'm guessing i'll need a new pulley(s).

I have one from a '69 BB Impala, but I'm guessing that wouldn't work due to the different mounting brackets? I might actually have a small block Impala pump as well.

Any input would be appreciated.

Compared to the people who are likely to reply to your post here soon I am not as qualified to say; but I was looking into this recently and someone on this site had found and shared (in the archives) this supplier for the power steering pump brackets:

It appears the advantage here is that for less than $100 you can have a set of brackets that permit the use of modern (brand new, not remanufactured) power steering pumps. The fasteners are metric on the new ones, by the way.

Assuming you have the short style water pump like my 1970 C10; please see the attached for the alan grove parts..

So that is part of the battle; (just getting the pump installed)..

Another aside, there is a difficult fastener if you are using one of the factory cast iron pump brackets - it is the bolt that attaches to the driver's side front motor mount bolt hole - very very difficult to get a wrench on as far as I know. One of the tricks was to cut a slot in the bracket but I have not tried it.

Lots of different styles of pump brackets so get read for some confusion - it does depend how many pulleys are on your damper, whether or not your truck was an A/C truck; etc.

Thanks for the info. While I'd like to stick with a stock unit (as the rest of my truck is stock/original), I'll check it out.

While i have not used them The Grove stuff is what was planned on my 70 short and my 71 one ton both are without steering at the moment.

Here are a few photos and part numbers that might help; this is out of a SBC350 and 1970 C10 but should be the same mounting points in your 307 block of course.

I can only offer info about the pump/pulley/brackets for now - the actual power steering hydraulic recirculating ball unit that attaches to the steering column is a bridge too far for me at the moment - I know nothing about it except the number cast into mine which is 7802642 and that it is so heavy duty it looks like it would be right at home steering a battle tank.

The pump pulley is stamped GM and number 3925537 DC

This is with the 8" damper and it is an A/C truck

There are two brackets that bolt together to hold the pump to the block and provide a means to adjust v-belt tension.

The larger ductile iron bracket has a GM number cast into it: 3957466

The smaller steel bracket has no identifying numbers on it.

Regarding my earlier comment about the engine mount bolt being hard to get to - upon closer inspection if you disassemble the two parts of the bracket and remove them from the pump body it is then easy to get to that bolt - however I have not yet tried to reassemble everything so we'll see how it goes..

Thanks a ton for the pics. Very helpful. I'm guessing the easiest way for me to do this is to find someone parting a truck with a 307 or 350 in it that has power steering.
