Plan for 5.3 build

I want some opinion on my build. I have been all over the internet planning and there is so much mixed information I just want to be sure I get this right so I am happy with the end result. This will be for a 5.3/4l60e combo in a 74' C10.

Stock bottom end
243 heads milled .030
stock L33 head gaskets (.051)
TSP 224R 112LS
Stock truck manifold
2800 stall

Does that seem like it will be a good performer. I want something with some power but don't want to get too extreme. I want to keep good street and highway manners.

Do you mean stock truck intake manifold? or exhaust manifolds?

If you mean intake that is fine the truck intakes flow quite well. If you mean exhaust manifolds, I would consider headers instead. They will be worth decent power with a cam and 243 heads.

If you have an older lower performance 5.3 with dished pistons then milling .030 off the 243 heads will put compression back to stock levels. On a newer/HO 5.3 with flat top pistons milling the heads .030 will give a nice compression bump.

Over all it should be a pretty decent performer with any of the above possibilities.

I was talking stock intake manifold.
They are dished pistons. I was trying to get compression to about 10:1

Also, TSP is recommending a 2800rpm stall for the 224R cam but everything else I find online (forums) people are recommending a 3600 rpm stall. pretty big difference there...

IMO, a 2800 stall isn't worth the expense. You won't feel it over stock. Hell, my Circle D 3200 feels stock to me. It's not loose at all...but that's what I need at my power level...I'd blow thru a loose converter.

3400-3600 with a good cooler would be my choice for your setup, assuming it's a play truck, and doesn't work to hard.

Which circle D did you get? I am in the market for about the same thing and some real world feedback would be awesome.

I remember you as "compressor surge" I believe from back in the central Illinois domestics days.

Ha! Hi Curt. You had the FC LS1 RX7, right?

According to my invoice, i have the "4L80 LS Pro Series Stage III 258mm 2B" from Circle D.
