1968 K1500 V6 Farmer Green

OK I stumbled upon this old girl about a year ago... a rusty old original that had just arrived at a local yard. Basic Gyppo Strippo Model other and some Farmer Tech and some late model car seats...it seemed to be complete and still turned over. it has an old school Fisher Speed cast plow. VIN KM10D_PB27XXX GVWR 5800
below are pics as I found her. original 305E with a 1960 intake and Holley I bbl

Re: 1968 K1500 V6 Farmer Green

I plan on keeping her a basic truck dark green no chrome.
Maybe one of you will know if the white grille was basic trim level? Ive seen many with a argent grill but few with a white grille... I like it.

The cab on this thing is shot.... but all of the interior is there Lt green glove box Inst panel Visors and door panels. the SPID is missing. . It has the 16x6 steel rims with 7.50x16 pizza cutter snow tires. It is a 4 speed too....

Re: 1968 K1500 V6 Farmer Green

Fast forward to late March 2013... after a long winters nap. I spent a day with the old girl... checked all fluids (check) and proceeded to replace the coil, points (set to .017), condenser, Cap, rotor and wires. plugs appeared fine.
Put a battery in her cranker her for 2-3 min with ignition disconnected to get oil in her at low rpms..... connected the ignition, gave her a splash of fresh gas and hooked her to a small can of fresh fuel. set the choke, turned the key.... She roared to life first turn....

she clattered a bit, smokedn shook, after a min or 2 she settled down and ran decent.... ( ive seen videos of 305s running on Utube) she sounded and ran fine....
we then replaced the hood with a red 68 chevy hood. the original one was shot and the passenger side holes for the hinge had long since rotted away.

I had to tug on the core support to get the hood to close right. At some point, the truck had a front end hit on the drivers side which punched the eyebrow in and they did a **** job of fixing it. and the core got pushed in .

so I was curious to see if she moved.... dropped it in Lo and she moved. Mind you there are no brakes, but the drums offered resistance ...
I drove it around the yard a little and parked her in a new spot.

Re: 1968 K1500 V6 Farmer Green

Due to the fact the underside of the cab is toast, the linkage and such did not work the smoothest but it ran and most of the lights worked ... even the idiot lights worked.
I was off to find a cab. and since i had 2 other projects to button up. I left her all summer. to sit.

Re: 1968 K1500 V6 Farmer Green

Fast forward to Sept. I located a decent cab... not mint but soild in the important areas. its a 71 Chevy 2wd cab. It was Ziebarted so the main floor and month areas are excellent and the area above the windshield is rust free.
the guy tossed in a set of 5 16x6 steelies he had from an old 68 2wd he was trying to fix....and offered up 2 doors... not the best but can be used until i can get my good pass door on and find a drivers door.
250 bux....
the outer floor on the drivers side is the worst.... but i have a new set of outer floors...
I need to grab floor supports to fix the outer half, A-pillar drop, kick panel cab corners.... but its very serviceable as it sits....

Re: 1968 K1500 V6 Farmer Green

The bed is solid underneath but the sides are shot and in need of a tailgate. I looked on CL, and located a nice solid set of 8 ft GMC bed sides... ( he had just sold the tailgate)
picked em up and was given a very soild passenger inner fender as a bonus. (free is good) the bed sides came with the inner tubs and the lower extensions...

Re: 1968 K1500 V6 Farmer Green

Disassembly of the front clip.
I spent 5 hours taking the front fenders off the truck to prepare for the cab removal.... gotta love when people use a nut and bolt on a difficult spot ( Drivers front lower bolt core support to fender behind the marker..
Of course all the inner to outer fender J nuts were rusted junk and broke as soon as they were turned. but I got the clip off... sorry no pics..

Re: 1968 K1500 V6 Farmer Green

spent 2 afternoons gutting the cab. the heater box is junk, the mice had a nice home in it and their urine rotted the bottom out of it... the heater core is solid and the coolant is like new..... gas tank was perforated at the bottom probably when the rear supports gave up the ghost. (he was running it on a 5 gallon can on the passenger seat.
here is what it looked like gutted

Re: 1968 K1500 V6 Farmer Green

i got the cab mount areas repaired last week (pics to come) and while getting the cab ready to set on the frame, I was poking around the yard and found a slip on rear passenger cab floor support and a set of cab corners, i already had a drivers a pillar extension, a set of rockers, a drivers side complete outer floor (frt to rear) and front cab/ floor supports. i got busy and got the passenger floor support and made a rear outer floor based on the drivers side but reversed and installed them with the cab corner,,
I was working out in 28 degree weather but its butt welded and solid..

Re: 1968 K1500 V6 Farmer Green

The V6's are neat aren't they? Most 67 GMC's didn't have SPIDS. I wonder if yours ever had one...

The cast plow isn't cast iron is it?

Looking forward to seeing the rust repair, need to do that on mine.
