Fitler on Power Steering Return Line?

I have a '71 GMC Jimmy with a 350 V8. It has P/S. I live in the desert with a lot of fine-grained sand getting in everything. Can I run a filter on the 3/8 fuel-type hose that runs from the P/S Pump to the gear box? I'm thinking a fuel filter might work. This is on the low pressure side. BTW, which way does it flow?
My gear box is making a whirring noise. I keep adding fluid, but it comes back. Today I noticed some abrasion on the LP hose where it rubs on the frame. Could be my leak. Since I gotta run a new low pressure hose, I might just put the filter in as well. Good or bad idea?

I mean FILTER.

It's done all the time. Your local NAPA store has a filter specific just for this.

Cool. Unfortunately there isn't really a "local" NAPA on my side of town [Tucson]. I will try Merle's, a local chain. They stock better quality junk than O'Reilly/Autozone.
