Re: Well it’s started.

Well, here the snow is now mostly gone again, so everything is a soggy mess after it finally thaws out in the afternoon. A few relatively nice days (40s) forecast and then it's supposed to start snowing again next week

We've got forty acres but I just mow about an acre around the house, plus a margin around the barn/arena for fire protection and a wide path between the two. Also once or twice a season I mow the "triangle" down by the county road for a fire safety zone and staging area.

But the last couple years we have had the house side of the property fenced so the horses can graze over here part time. They keep the "lawn" pretty well chewed down. I used to mow it every few days in May and June but now just mow it once or twice to get it even and knock down the weeds that the horses won't eat.

Sorry Boog, but you didn't start it. . I've been mowing my lawn for a month.. I marked it on the calendar -- February 25th.. I'll be doing it again this weekend...

Sorry. Sometimes it's hard to tell the difference. Us rough cut country gentleman must maintain our more refined level of sophistication and keep all our junk confined to one area off to the side/never right in the front yard. I see you have that standard upheld. And while I have your attention, "'Scuze me there buddy, could you hand me that thing of French's you got there for my baloney sammich?

It's funny with all my junk in my yard the only thing the neighbor ever said anything about was my hearse.

She came over all worried and asked if everyone was okay.

And we do not do French's sir. Only Grey Poupon. After all we are gentleman.

Re: Well it’s started.

Sometimes when I’m in working in someone’s house they’ll ask if I need anything?
Me: naw, I’m just like mustard, I’m already prepared.
My wife says I’m more like Bologna.
I decided my yard can wait til next weekend. Turns out I’m a procrastinator too.

My wife hires someone to mow our yard, because I said "I quit" 10 years ago. We have 8 1/2 acres, behind our house, I clip with a bush hog twice a year.

I took the bush hog out to the house yesterday so I could get started.

She don't understand the whole "I like to ride a tractor, but I hate to ride a lawn mower" thing.

I mow about 3 or 4 acres. For about 4 years I’ve mowed it with a JD 345, 54” deck. Last year I bought a used Ferris zturn with 60” deck...total game changer.
If I had as much as you have to mow I’d pay the kids to mow it for me.

If I had any ambition, I would have a couple of automated mowers. I need to build a 1/4 mile of fence first.

Re: Well it’s started.

Bought a 62" JD with all wheel steer last year. What a great investment, almost cur now time in half. We were using a 52" Husqvarna previously (which is for sale) for 3.5 acres. Things are starting to green up, it's been a little cool until this week. We've had plenty or rain, everything is saturated, so when it does warm up game on.

The fun part was learning. I didn’t know you could do wheelies on a ztr until I got one.
Been wanting 3 or 4 head of bison for quite some time now. Having the proper fence has been my biggest setback.

Re: Well it’s started.

Though the weather has changed some, like clock-work I shut the water off the last weekend in October, and turn it on the last weekend in April. Works every time. There's no mowing in-between less for collecting leaves.

1/4 mile is one side of my place

Plus I have a diagonal cross fence.

You probably have a lot more grass per acre, though.

Re: Well it’s started.

I DO NOT miss mowing. I had a big back yard and it was all St. Augustine grass. Very thick. But I needed it because I had 2 really big dogs and they would tear up the grass.

It was a pain to mow. My old mower wasn't cutting it. So I got a McLane self propelled front throw mower. That made it worse. This thing would self propel itself right into my fence. it was always getting away from me. So I sold it and went back to fighting with the other lousy mower I had. Did I mention that I hate mowing.

That self propelled thing was like wrestling a fat sweaty girl. (Not that I've ever done that)

Re: Well it’s started.

I don't have acreage to boast, I only have how quick and easy my place is to mow to brag on. It's no problem at all and I enjoy the place looking well kept up. I had two early John Deere 110s (round fender) I used for years. I also kept the meadow by my place mowed for the kids, and the stream is a pretty sight running through. I kept putting in flower beds to cut down on trimming square corners or getting close to the buildings. Made mowing much easier and cut back on the total grassy area. I ended up restoring both 110s and selling them. I've been pushing a mower and it takes about an hour, so I do it on a weekday evening, usually Thursday. I never liked self-propelled mowers. More work to counter what it wants to do than simply pushing four free-wheels. I have a Husquvarna push mower with magnesium deck, steel wheels, and ball bearings. Not your throw-away push mower. A quality simple mowing device. I have eliminated all the places where a weed whacker is needed, too.

I have mowed twice already, getting to the point where it can be done every three days, I don't mind and I actually look forward to the seat time with my tractor, it's my "other" disease besides old trucks.

Re: Well it’s started.

My place isn't bad, 1/2 acre, plus I do my elderly neighbor's yard, another 1/2. Right now my other neighbor is also getting done by me till he recovers from back surgery. so, about 1.5 all total. When we bought our place, I wanted some yard, but not enough to make me work hard when I got old (like now ). I just have the typical JD 42" deck, mostly because of all the trees and bushes to maneuver around.

IT's enough to let me enjoy being outside, but not enough to make it seem like a JOB. This time a year is bad just keeping up with the leaves and trimmings all the bushes back. I THINK I finished up yesterday, but these stupid trees in the south love to drop leaves for about 6 months.

Looks like a pleasant place to be. I enjoy mowing. I get a chance to let my thoughts run things over, whatever comes to mind. There's always something. I also know it's good aerobic exercise. If I had a larger piece of land it wouldn't be mowed grass. It's against my religion to cut grass on the weekend. If it doesn't get cut one weeknight it waits till next week. I refuse to be a slave to my grass. I hear mowers running on the weekend, sometimes fills the air, and I think what slaves those poor people are. I'd plant wildflowers or some crop, like grow produce. Or put stock on it.

Well, we had a couple nice days and it started snowing again this morning

Looks like the grass will be sheltering in place underground for a few more weeks

I got my weeds clipped behind the house. I spent all day Friday and Saturday and this afternoon burning fallen limbs. One was a monster. I had to take couple of Ibuprofen just now.
