S10 and coil overs

I'm not finding the search to help me on this question. I'm looking at front and rear coil overs (4 link) for the 54 with a S10 frame.

If this has been covered please direct me to the site.

Otherwise, has anyone done this and if so, I'd like to know any information about it.

Thanks.

Re: S10 and coil overs

Probably because the S-10 mini truck brigade was far more into laying frame than driving great.

The reasons for using an S-10 frame to begin with was that they were cheap (at that time) easy to find and the homework for air bags had been done.

Still ten seconds of searching brings up https://www.ridetech.com/product/198...le-adjustable/

https://www.summitracing.com/search/...olet/model/s10

https://www.ridetech.com/product/198...ilover-system/

https://www.bing.com/search?q=coilov...616e53105cbf93

Looking at those says that you aren't going to see many frame swaps with coil overs as they get out of the whole :It's cheaper than an MII on a stock frame real quick.

Re: S10 and coil overs

QA1 and Viking both make coil overs that work with stock lower arms. I’ve seen several people running them on swaps on Instagram but not posting on the forum.

Also, nice to see mr48chev can’t reply in a s10 related post without negative comments still.

I just don't see why guys want to build a truck that will always be viewed as a cheap build. No matter how much you spend on an S-10 swap truck an how great it drives it will always be seen as a cheap build by prospective buyers.

Tell me the last time you saw the talking heads at the Barrett Jackson auction Rave about that wonderful S-10 swap under that fabulous truck going across the block with the under car camera showing the chassis on Saturday night.

They are great when you start out with a bare cab and build an inexpensive truck to drive and have fun with and don't start adding a ton of expensive extras.

What really bugs me about the S-10 thing is new guys to the hobby showing up with a real nice running and driving truck that may even have a V8 swap and is a nice driver saying that 'I just bought this AD truck and now what S-10 do I buy so I can swap frames". Taking a really nice truck and hacking it up and tossing a nice frame to stick a worn out 300K work truck frame under it. I see that on Facebook every week.

The Kid showing up in the yard asking if I have a few Chevy truck body parts to go with the bare cab that he bought from the guy in Goldendale and the bed he got from the guy in Othello to put on the S-10 long bed chassis that is under the dented up truck he drove in the yard in doesn't bother me. He is going by the original concept of using an S-10 chassis.

Re: S10 and coil overs

Thanks guys.

I did see the Ridetech system, and it is a bit pricey. I've been looking at other forums and seen some of the Summit, Ebay, etc. coil overs and have seen some of those items, but I was hoping to see what some others had done to their trucks.

I looked at Michigan Metal Works front A-arms for coil overs and you can get them built in different lengths to avoid using spacers on front.

Still, it would be nice to see others with the S10 frame with a 45-55.1 on it and a 4 link, front and rear coils for a reasonable price, it possible.

Re: S10 and coil overs

QA1s are great coilovers and the autocross guys with S10s use em a lot. you would be hard pressed to find something better.

as far as the rear, the bolt on ridetech is the only bolt on system with instructions, everything else is going to need work. speedway sells a coilover link setup as a universal weld on setup.

Re: S10 and coil overs

Thanks Joe, that helps.

I guess I should have asked "if the coil over systems improve the ride for a truck that will be driven on the street a little, but not on any kind of track"?

That is a lot of money for the system and I don't know if I could tell the difference on the street.

Re: S10 and coil overs

i like the ride of good coils and gas charged shocks, and slipper leaf springs in the back arent bad. coilovers make it ride and handle better when low, and give more adjustability both in height and valving. depending on where you mounted the cab it might already be plenty low. so maybe just get some gabriel monotube shocks for a g body, they are slightly shorter but have more effective travel (being monotube). although i have a perfectly good ride with monroe twin tubes too. if you are set on doing a 4 link you will need coilovers anyway for the rear. avoid colloquialisms people use like "handles like a gokart" or "rides like a caddy" because in my experience neither are really true, its just generalizations for darty feeling or over cushy.

Re: S10 and coil overs

The good thing about coil overs is also the bad thing about them. There are so many option for setup, it can be daunting to set up initially for the ride you want/need. Between spring rate, preload, rebound, high speed compression and slow speed compression(if you have that adjustment) there is a lot of options to make the best of them.

With that being said, I’ve done coil overs in 3 of my vehicles and all of them rode and handled better afterwards. My 3100 will get coilovers in the future as well.
