'72 Suburban - 2005 L59 5.3/4L60 swap

Well, I bit the bullet today and picked up a 2005 L59 and 4L60 out of a Suburban. Complete drop out with 84,000 miles. Pretty sure I got the entire front harness since it has airbag sensors and turnsignals. It was complete with fuse box, air box and MAF, computer, Fuel pump, collectors with o2 sensors, DBW tac module and pedal. Lots of goodies and nice and complete for $1600, which i feel was fair.

Is this for the Flex Fuel?

Looks like you got a decent deal for how complete it looks. Just make sure its a 2wd tranny, and you'll have pretty much everything you need to get started (as far as stock parts are concerned).

Yep, its 2wd. A little more than i wanted to pay, but was the most complete deal i could find with fairly low miles.

Looks like you got a flex fuel sensor too. Are you going to try to keep it flex fuel? Not worth the hassle in my opinion but thought I'd ask. Good luck with the project!

na. the sensor is already in the spare pile. i havent seen e85 in my part of the woods yet anyway.

got the engine cleaned a little and the harness off. it took longer to get the two plugs off the tranny near the shifter than the rest of the harness combined. I've decided to save a buck and do the harness myself. hopefully it wont be too bad.

Re: '72 Suburban - 2005 L59 5.3/4L60 swap

I've made a little progress. Still waiting on some engine parts to come in, so I started on the harness. It wasn't too bad so far. The harness is stripped so now i have to round up a fuse box and relays and get them wired in and recover the harness. I used the pinouts from LT1swap.com, but had issues when it came to the C2 underhood, as the pinout on the site is from a 99 i believe and mine is a 05. I ended up checking continuity on all of the pink wires to find out where they went in the C2 plug.

The offending harness finally removed. I had trouble getting two of the tranny plugs undone. Once i got them out, it looks like they had been glued in at some point.

Starting on the PCM plugs

The C2 plug.

This is what all i removed.

And this is whats left.

I started a little tear down to replace some of the seals and clean it up.

Re: '72 Suburban - 2005 L59 5.3/4L60 swap

finally got some parts coming in. The cam arrived along with the lunati spring kit. I also ordered comp pushrods, arp manifold bolts, and trick flow spring tool.
i got the tbss manifolds from GMPP and the engine plates are ebay specials. The intake rubber boots were supposed to be all black, so i'm trying to work that out with the seller. i can deal with the red filter, but not a fan of the red elbow.

Progress looks good.

A tip for reinstalling those 2 transmission connectors. Heat up the connectors and the range switch sockets with a heat gun. That glue will get soft and allow you plug them back in easily.

Re: '72 Suburban - 2005 L59 5.3/4L60 swap

Every one I've seen has had that "glue" in them. Not sure why they did that though. I usually clean it all out before putting the connectors back in since I had a wire break inside the unsulation trying to get the plug out, then spent a long time trying to find the problem with my back up lights.

Re: '72 Suburban - 2005 L59 5.3/4L60 swap

hmm... back up lights. Where do i need to tie in to those at?
Cleaned up the engine and used the Chrysler balancer puller from O'reillys (67005) to pull the balancer. The two rods that it includes are too short for the chevy application, so i used the balancer bolt to start it, then switched to a 24mm 1/2" socket to pull it the rest of the way off.

Get out and drive the truck this summer and have some fun!
It sucks not being able to hear!

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Nice project. What diameter is the air intake tube? Do you have a part number for the air cleaner kit?

Re: '72 Suburban - 2005 L59 5.3/4L60 swap

Thanks, its slowly starting to come togerther.

The intake is a ebay special. $57 shipped. I figure if it wont work, i can always resale it. Its a 4" tube.

Ebay air intake

The parts for my fuse box and OBD2 plug came in today. I'm going to build on the fuse box how to on LT1swap.com and just add 4 circuits.

Re: '72 Suburban - 2005 L59 5.3/4L60 swap

littlevictories - Already in the works on new knock sensors. one was pretty rusted up, and i managed to chip the plug on the other one...

Finally got the engine sealed up.

And my homemade balancer installer. I used a piece of 16mmx2.0 all thread about 10 inches long, a couple nuts, a couple 1/2" pipe nipples and 2 3/4" washers.
