has your restoration caused hearing damage?

I'm 15 and this is my first build, and after a year of work, i know i have damaged my hearing. Grinders, air sanders, cutoff wheel, air compressor, and i'm sure there's other things. you can add to that loud music (non truck related) but soon enough i'll be driving with open headers or rockin with the subwoofer bumpin.

surley guys that have been doing this for awhile have damaged their hearing aswell. i know of ear protection, but i only use it when i know i'll be grinding on something for awhile. i'm pretty sure i'm on the deaf pathway, and i'm always having people repeat themselves. does anybody else want to share?

15 Y/O? You are a lucky kid. I was still scrapping together stingrays and making choppers of 'em when I was your age. When I was a kid we didnt worry about protection while grinding. Then again we did'nt much worry about our ears either..

Re: has your restoration caused hearing damage?

I'm 14, and my dad often tells me to do this or do that a certain way so it won't be painful when you get older. But do you think I actually listen to him??
I often have to ask people to repeat themselves. Partly because most of the people I know can't talk clear.

Safety first, don't screw around. I've seen too many "heros" at the workplace who are missing fingers, have one eye, steel pins in their knees and they say "EH?" all the time.

Re: has your restoration caused hearing damage?

Injuries show stupidity. If you are intelligent enough to be using dangerous tools and use safety equipment you have no business working on cars. Just remember do as I say not as I do. I have a problem with not wearing proper hearing protection, I do wear eye and hand protection at all times, I have had to many close calls, but I value my hearing alot and if I am doing grinding for long periods of time I put in the ear plugs.

that would be ME guess ive always been smart enough to wear ear protection. i work in a wood shop now and there are ALOT of the guys who wear no ear protection. one guy in particular is 1/2 deaf. he says WHAT to EVERYTHING you say to him unless you have your lips in his ear. he knows he has problems but still doesnt wear ear protection. doesnt wear a dust mask either
start wearing your ear protection now and you may have decent hearing when your 30.

Re: has your restoration caused hearing damage?

Protect your hearing now while you still have it. The ear Dr. told me at my last visit he can't do anything & I just need to try to save what i have left.
My wife says I'm hard of hearing but i think it's just selective hearing

Re: has your restoration caused hearing damage?

Southpa, sorry, but everyone up there says "eh" all the time... don't they?
But I do agree, wear all the safety equipment you can, you'll be better off in the long run. They're not convenient, but dust masks, face shields may keep you from getting lung cancer or losing an eye.

The way I see it, save your hearing for something you want to hear, maybe you"ll want to listen to music still after you're 35. And nobody wants to talk to someone who's hard to talk to. My grandpa had hearing aids since I can remember, and it was always hard for people to communicate with him. He worked in a machine shop for most of his life and was in the army in WWII, neither of which help his hearing.

Not truck related, but watch out when using older chainsaws, some don't even have a muffler. Just an exhaust diverter.

This is why I got out of Car stereo competing, my wife always says that
I hear only what I want to hear, I just say that it's selective hearing

Re: has your restoration caused hearing damage?

I definitely wear hearing protection when I'm using air grinders and when I mow and cut wood. I'm 38 and already can see the effects of loud stereos when I was younger. Kind of sucks when you have kids and you can't always hear them (course some times ya don't want to hear them at all).

Re: has your restoration caused hearing damage?

Ruined my hearing long ago, D6 dozers, etc for 10 - 12 hour days for many, many years.

I hear well enough to pass the DOT physical for a CDL but I have problems hearing what people say if there are other noises around. Its a royal PITA. Protect your hearing now!

Re: has your restoration caused hearing damage?

I've been wearing hearing protection for a while now (I'm 38). I think the duck blind has done more damage in recent years...BAMB!

Have this ringing in my ears and really notice that my right ear doesn't hear as well as left.

Protect now and you will save yourself lots of problems in future.

Amen GunRack. When I was younger, used to do many stupid things. Now it seems like I try to do only things that won't get me killed / crippled / blind / deaf / etc. Amazing the wisdom that comes with age.

Re: has your restoration caused hearing damage?

After 42 years at the St. Paul Ford plant my dad doesn't hear real well. After 60 years at the wheel of a tractor my father-in-law doesn't hear real well.

When I'm in my 70s I want to hear my grand kids.

I don't run my compressor, mow the lawn, or run any small engine I know I'm going to be standing around for a while without hearing protection.

Those little foam ear plugs at Wal*Mart are cheap insurance.

I used to wear them to rock concerts in my heavy mental days (misspelled on purpose). Heck I even wear them at MN Vikings games.
