*350 Turbo Leaking*

I just had my 49 in the shop to be checked for a transmission leak. They replaced the pan gasket, speedometer seal, shifter shaft seal, and the seal on the tail shaft I believe. After driving it home and it sat all night I noticed a small puddle of fluid on the floor. It is right under the shifter shaft seal that they replaced but it seems dry. Every place around what was replaced seems dry. I checked the fluid level and it was hard to tell as the fluid seems to be all over the tip stick. Is there some place on the upper portion of the transmission where fluid might be leaking? If they over filled it could it be pushing fluid out somewhere? Thanks guys.

Sometimes changing the shift shaft seal doesn’t cure the leak.
Sometimes you need to remove the shaft and clean off all the little burrs and scratches on it.

Re: *350 Turbo Leaking*

Thanks for the info guys. I cleaned everything off, got the engine up to operating temperature, then let it set. It's a very small leak and it is coming from the new shifter shaft seal. Would High Temp silicone work once the area was cleaned good with brake fluid?

Likely not.
The po of my 84 had managed to silicone an o ring in there too but the shaft had to come out for a polish to remove the scratches.

Re: *350 Turbo Leaking*

Well guys....it's been a while and after a close inspection the leak is at the shifter shaft and the speedometer cable. I have two pans under the truck to catch the fluid. Odd thing is, the fluid lever never has never gone down. These leaks are not excessive but over time there is a good amount. I always get the engine up to operation temperature then check the level. Sometimes it's hard to tell on the dipstick so I always pull the dipstick out and clean it off, on a paper towel I mark the bottom of the dipstick and the high level. When I pull the dipstick out I put it on the paper towel lining up my marks and slide the dipstick which transfers the fluid to the paper towel. The fluid level is always at the high mark. How can this be???

Re: *350 Turbo Leaking*

I would grab a new selector shaft and seal...

https://www.jegs.com/i/Sonnax/852/35...yABEgJLZPD_BwE

A new speedo drive kit is available also

https://www.classictransmissionsolut...iABEgK9zfD_BwE

Suggest you clean the dipstick very well with brake clean and spray the bottom of the stick with flat black paint...let it thoroughly dry ...

I find it makes it easier to read the levels....

Hope this helps...

Trans fluid spreads easily, a little leak will create a large mess...especially if the floor is painted or sealed.
