I got a guy here in town that runs a mechanic shop that is going to give me a free 700r4. He thinks it came out of an early 80's Caprice. The only thing missing is some switch on the top of it off to the left. He told me it's the torque converter electrical switch. Can I use this thing to put in my truck? He told me it already has a mechanical speedometer.

Also where can I get a kit to rebuild it. I'm not knowledgeable at all about tranny's. I thought I'd seen a post on here several months back about a kit.

Yes sir, you can use it in your truck. I believe there's an FAQ article detailing the swap.

And, some folks are going to pipe in here and tell you how weak an early 80's 700 trans is, and they are right, but it can be upgraded when you rebuild it. For the initial price you're paying (nothing), you're way ahead, so upgrading it won't be too big a deal.

If you're buying a 700 you'd want as late of one as you can get, but free is free.

Not to hijack your thread, but I'm kind of in the same boat. My cousin is a mechanic and he has a 700R4 from an 89 Chevy truck with a 6.2L diesel. I know I'll have to convert it to a mechanical speedo, but will I also need to get a different converter? I assume the converter used in diesel trucks has a lower stall speed than the one used behind gas engines. Anything else I need to look for, Tx?

There are a bunch of rebuild kits on ebay ranging in price from $90 to over $300. I'm not sure what a good rebuild kit should cost, but I would think your mechanic friend would be able to steer you in the right direction.

Hey Tx are there any kits with upgrades you would recommend. I have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to a rebuild, but maybe the book will have pics.

I bought a 700R4 a few years ago but never used it. I also bought the shift kit,
manual, tape, and a updated valve. It came out of a 1984 1/2 Caprice wagon.
The tape that I got is very detailed. I goes from taking the transmisson apart
to putting it back together. It also shows what to look for in every part as to
whether it is good or needs replacing. After watching the tape, I don't think
that I needed to buy the manual.

I went and picked it up today I don't know if it's an older 700r4 or not like I thought before. I can't tell what year it is. Or even what it's even out of.

On the 700r4 the numbers are stamped onto a boss behind the bellhousing flange on the pass side, just above the pan on the drivers side, or just behind the governor cover stamped vertically where the case meets the tailshart housing.

I believe that's a long tailshaft turbo 350.....I hope I'm wrong though....Even if it is, the price was right. You can always use it for trading stock.

If it has a vacuum modulator, it's probably a TH350. My 200R4 does not have aything but a TV cable.

My first thought when I saw the pictures was that it looked like my TH350. The pan on the 350 is almost square except one corner is chopped off.

I don't know what a 700R4 looks like.

I guess I'll ask him if he wants it back. I know there's a 700r4 in the caprice on the side of his shop. The motor is blown, but he said the tranny is good. He told me he would sell it to me for $25 when ever he pulled it out.
