Taking the cut out of the middle of the bedside like others you can see an interruption in the flow of that falling body line. Not in my case. I'll take a close up side rear shot to show you the flowing body line.

It is easy to work that last inch of body line the perfectly match the whole bed side.

I also finished up the left side marker light.
The falling body line is the part I am curious about.

Is this something a qualified body man would find easy.? Do you guys just bang it in line with a hammer and dolly of some sort.?

I'm planning on doing the frame cutting myself and to get a mobile welder to come by and weld my frame. And I'm looking for a bodyman to do the bedsides for me. So I'm just learning how it is done so I can find someone that knows what they are doing.

Really nice work here by the way.

Ok I'll be brave and ask, what exactly is a falling body line anyway, is this where the body protrudes outward about 4" below the top of the bed rails?

Re: A different approach to a LWB to SWB conversion

I think it looks nice. When I did mine, I was concerned about the falling body line also (Swamp Rat, if you look at the upper body line on the bed it actually tapers down at the rear) but after reading one of the other tutorials, I did the screwdriver trick of prying the bed out a little to match the seams, it worked perfectly and you can't tell there was a difference in the drop since the outer skin is so flexible.

Welding is a lot like sex, you don't have to be great with the rod as long as you thoroughly prep the surface and your good at grinding

Great work on the side markers and the bed over all! How's your COE project going anyway?

Re: A different approach to a LWB to SWB conversion

I knew there had to be a different method than the traditional cut, butt and weld. I have a SWB box that has the most trashed bedsides you've ever seen and a pair of LWB sides that are near perfect I'm gonna give this a try. Thanks for sharing.

A bit late, but...
If you look at the bedside in the last pic above, note that the horizontal bodyline isn't parallel with the the top of the bed, but falling (quote) at the rear.

Great thread. If the OP wants to drop by N. TX and do my rockers and cab corners, I'm all ears

Basically it is done. I saved over 26 feet of weld and retained 95% of the original paint. It may not be better, but it is a different way to do your long wheel base to short wheel base conversion.

That looks incredible. Amazing job.
Any new updates?

Re: A different approach to a LWB to SWB conversion

I've changed out the dash harness, turn signal switch, and fixed the messed up heater system. I'm just waiting on a new cigarette lighter, drive shaft support bearing, and back up light switch. Then everything will be working 100% and ready for the state police to inspect it.

Oh, and I changed out the gold bow ties on the caps to blue Boeing ties. I wanted the caps more period correct.

Re: A different approach to a LWB to SWB conversion

Love the before and afters. The first pic the trees are bare and there's dead leaves and twigs all over the driveway, and then the second BAM! leaves on the trees and nice green grass.

In all seriousness; what a fun build to watch.
