has anyone seen this setup in 1 of our trucks, know any of the ins and outs. i've worked on (replaced parts) a few, some worked good and some were starved for adequate braking and steering at low rpm when used at the same time. came mostly on 3/4, 1 ton, and diesel pickups. this sure would clean up the eng. compartment of the 71 gmc project. anyone?

theses are still in production even on non-diesels, my bro has a 2002 hd 6.0 crewcab and his has the hydraulic brake/steering setup. drives and brakes great..................4 wheel discs do help though.

While not able to contribute anything really concrete, guy that lived around here had a '71 with the hydraulic system off an early 80's cadillac. Cleaned up the engine compartment and stopped real well.
Wasn't real easy but no worse than, say, putting on rear discs or anything.

Ya. I just picked up a 72 1/2 ton Camper Special parts truck and it has a Power Brake Booster on it. I plan to install it on my 70. I just have to find the time.

I have a 67 gmc dump truck that I installed the hydro boost on from 76 chev i just drillrd new holes in the plate tha bolts to the firewall to match 6772 and made a rod , if i remember right it is like a non power setup. if you want i can get you pics

thanks for the input,....... for those of you that are not familiar with what i'm referring to............hydroboost or hydro-vac are usually referring to vacuum assisted power brakes. i am referring to hydraulic fluid assisted power brakes that share the pressure of the power steering pump. it is slaved or teed from the pump and has it a separate cylinder to assist in braking and it bolts in place of the vacuum powered diaphragm brake booster.

I had a 2001 HD that had that setup and it didn't look too bad, but I had a 76 1 ton with it and it looked like an octapus having a litter, wouldn't do much to clean up the engine compartment. The one tons system always leaked was basicly a pain in the butt. I would think a smaller vacuum booster mounted flush against the firewall would look better, cost less and wouldn't be any harder to adapt. My 2 cents

this is what i am talking about also. has a total of three power steering lines one from the pressure side of the pump to the hydro boost from there to the steering box then to the return side of the pump i also put a dana 60 in the front and it will stop alot harder than vac assist brakes. its to dark now but tommarow iwill make mooneyes4b get of his lazy but and take a pic for you , i'm to cheep to have a digital cam so i make him take all of my pics

There is alot of those hydroboosts in the scrapyards in my area. I wouldn't trust them though. I also just replaced one on my '82 GMC diesel pickup. You can probably get one at your local parts supply like AutoZone. That's where I got mine.Around $60 if I remember correctly. Let me knmow how you make out with the install if you go ahead with it.

i already have the whole setup somewhere stowed away, gotta find it. i needed some input from those of you that have been there and done that. 6772king, i needed some positive feedback (thanks) cuz i want to do this swap and i've heard that the biggest complaint can be traced to an orifice in the brake unit that regulates flow between the steering and brake unit. when it becomes clogged and resticts flow or ruptures and can't regulate flow is when the hard steer/poor brake power issue comes up.

The glovebox sticker on my factory PS/PB '72 says "HYDRO-BOOST BRAKES" or something like that.....but it has a normal brake booster that operates on engine vaccum. Is that just a name for PB, or is my truck missing something, lol.

I know what you are talking about. I don't see why it won't work in one of these trucks. If you are looking for one, look for a 81 through I think 87 that has a 6.2 diesel in it, they have that kind of set up, I had an 83 with it on it, it worked good!

I am planning on the same setup on my 69 4x4, allready have all the parts and have the push rod figured out just need to get it installed. Here's a pic of a hydro boost in a 72 burb, I drove this truck several times and the brakes worked great.

I had this set up on my 97 dually and my 96 suburban. Both started leaking and had to be replaced. A friend of mine had one go out on his 95 dually. I don't have a real warm place in my heart for them.
Something to think about:
If you loose your power steering belt, do you loose your brakes?

lofly'a, I remember selling a bunch of those back in the 80's. Then there was a period where a bunch of people switched over to a conventional booster and master cylinder. Guess when they worked, they worked good. Just don't try to stop too quick if you throw a p/s belt.

DO YOURSELF A FAVOR, STICK WITH THE FACTORY VACUUM UNIT. MY BROTHER PICKUP, AND I ARE BOTH BUS MECHANICS. AND WE HAVE BOTH SEEN OUR SHARE OF THESE HYDROBOOST UNITS LEAKING LIKE CRAZY. I'VE HAD TO CHASE A COUPLE OF CHEVY/GMC 3500 VAN CONVERSIONS, BECAUSE OF BOOSTER LEAKS. WHEN THEY DO GO, THEY ARE VERY EXPENSIVE TO REPLACE( APROXIMATELY $300+). PLUS THEY HAVE BEEN RECALLED FOR PRESSURE LINE LEAKING. AND I AGREE ABOUT THE OCTOPUS GIVING BIRTH

they're $300 through a dealer. I recently got one at autozone for a little over $60.

SORRY CHEVY LOVER, I WOULDN'T TOUCH AUTOZONE WITH A TEN FOOT POLE. THEY MAKE THE "AID AUTO STORES" HERE ON LONG ISLAND LOOK LIKE A NAPA STORE. THEY BOTH CARRY NOTHING BUT LOW QUALITY JUNK. I WOULD CARRY MY TRUCK HOME ON MY BACK BEFORE I WALK INTO EITHER OF THOSE STORES!!

I will agree with ya. It just so happens that in my area they are propabliy the best we got. We got Napa, Pepboys(which sucks a dead mooses butt) and autozone. Napa is good but I can't always get the parts I'm after( I think it's the area). Pepboys is just to expensive. Usually between $10 and $30 more depending on the part(just the big stuff).

and I was wondering if your cap lock was stuck. no biggy.
