Re: 2nd 1972 Chevy Fleetside build (Green Monster)

My pit crew and I did some work this weekend on the truck. I moved a few things around. Switched the wiper switch to the other side, took the ashtray out and lowered the radio. Here are the pictures.....

Hey thanks Geoff! I can use the encouragement. At least the parts are on the floor now. I did end up selling a bunch of parts, mostly old parts left over from the first truck. As for the parts I was making, I had 6 people request them, but only three have actually sent me money for them. As I go along I'll make more parts for it. I do all of this stuff by hand. I don't have a CNC machine, or a plasma cutter. I would like a cutter, but who wouldn't? Any way, I'm moving forward. I posted a WTB red interior parts ad. Got a few notes, but not as many as I thought I would. It looks like the inside of the truck will be Viper Red with polished aluminum and chrome accents. As for the outside, I am leaning toward a 2 tone Viper Red top half, and Black bottom half with some color of stripe seperating the red and black??

One of my friends in town dose powder coating. He said he would do the wheels in gloss black for $45.00 ea. Seems like a decent deal. That includes the blasting of them. I think with the 3" trim rings and spiners, they might look decent.

Let me know when you get your cover. Post a picture of it. I'd like to see it on a finished truck.

Chris

Re: 2nd 1972 Chevy Fleetside build (Green Monster)

Well, if it wern't Daytona Weekend, I might have gotten the roof buttoned up. But I have a Daytona party every year, and had to get ready for it. As far as the truck goes, I did manage to get the old inner roof cut out, finish welded my windshield repair, panel flanged the exsisting roof for the new panel and got 2 coats of POR-15 on it. Not to bad I guess. Hopefully next week I'll have the inner roof done. Then I can move on to the floor.

Re: 2nd 1972 Chevy Fleetside build (Green Monster)

He's innocent! It was a clean bump! Toyotas just don't handle that well going fast.

I managed to get the roof finished for now. I guess there isn't much since making it look preety yet, it'll just get boogered up later. At any rate, I think it went back together nice. So I guess it's on to the floor pan. I still need to remove the steering column, and brace the door openings though. Any one have any advise on the bracing? What worked for you?

Re: 2nd 1972 Chevy Fleetside build (Green Monster)

So it has been a while since I have posted an update. So far, the engine is now on a stand and the cab is ready to be braced and taken off to do the floor pan. I am at a bit of a crossroad with the engine. I am leaning toward going to an LS1 powerplant with a carb. I have to do a little more poking around to see what all I need to do to adapt it to the truck, but the adjustability of the engine thru the use of a laptop is very attractive. Since I am going to use this truck to cruise and tow my other in it's trailer, it would be nice to have the ability to change the performance at will with a stroke of the keyboard. I have to do some more reading........

I have got most of the cab creature features packaged now. I still need to do something with the shifter. I think I am going to use the B&M Mega shifter because it has a lockout built in. The column shifter dose not have the lockout, and I am worried about my kids pulling out of park. I have this shifter in the other truck as well and love it. Great for street racing If I could find someone who has a tilt column without the shifter, I would be willing to make a trade.

I created my kick panel speaker boxes. I think all together, including the Kenwood 3 way 6.5" speakers, I have $65.00 into them. Not to bad. I shaped them with cardboard, and then fiberglassed over them. They fit perfect. I will cover them with Red vinyl after I know what tint of red the dash pad and seat cover are. I think I will add some polished trim to them as well. Not sure yet. The speaker grills will all be red with the bezels painted silver. This will be the trend throught the inside of the truck. I have it in my head, now I just need to make it happen in the garage. Slowly, but surely. Here are some pics.

I guess not to much explaination is required for these shots. Now I can start making some decent headway on this thing. I think this truck is going to turn out better than the 1st one. I'm anxious to get it going back together. The engine is still a mystery as to it's direction. I still have the LS1 deal going, but may build the 350 to a 383 for the time being. This way I can take my time on the LS1 and learn a few things about it in the process. I can't just do things half a$$. I want it right.

Thats all for now!

You know what? I probably should. Thanks gcburdic! Good eyes. Yes the garage has plenty of room for doing this sort of stuff.

Thanks man....just think it'll be sturdier....Now I look at it more...why not add another one from that center brace out to the back part of the door openings??...maybe prevent lateral movement???...Just a thought....

Re: 2nd 1972 Chevy Fleetside build (Green Monster)

Huston, we have a few more problems. I created a cart for the cab to roll around on, that worked out nice. But the rest is still a mess. I cut some sections out of the old floor where the same structure bead existed. I can use it to repair the toe board, and weld flanges. The rear of the cab is a bit more problematic. It is just too thin in places to weld the floor to. I think I am going to cut out a couple of sections and replace the metal with thicker stuff.

Until the next adventure...............

SO......After half a case of beer, the floor is in. Not an exact fit, but it's in. I over engineered my supports. I had to start cutting them out to get the cab to flex enough to allow the new floor to fit inside the cab. It dod not move one millimeter when the old one fell out. By the way, I have a gentely used floor pan for sale.
