Re: Diff help

Easiest is just replace the "chunk" as the 9" guys call the complete gear/differential setup in the housing if you can find a good used one.

I would look for a Dana 60 if you are looking for a bolt-in swap, but if you can fab then either a Full-Float 14 bolt if you work the truck pretty hard or a semi-float would be great if you just use it and don't abuse it. Either are fairly common with 3.73 or 4.10 gears.

If you have 4.57 and want to keep them, the full-float 14 bolts are out there with 4.56 gears.

Re: Diff help

Is it whining all the time? Or only while accelerating, or.....?

Reason I ask is many years ago, mine started making a slight noise on deceleration only. Turned out to be a slightly pitted pinion pocket bearing. New bearing fixed it and it's been good ever since.

Re: Diff help

to fix it right you need to completely strip it down and go thru it. if you can get the parts. all else is jack legging it.

Re: Diff help

From what I have heard, bearings are common but gearsets are like hen's teeth. Good luck.

Re: Diff help

Bolt in solution is either a donor center section or Dana 60. IMO, the best solution is a later model housing with shock and mounts replaced. The semi-float 14 bolt is cheap and as strong as the Dana 60. May not have the panache though. The full 14 bolt is almost as cheap and super stout.
