Using a random orbital polisher

I've got a bunch of questions on using one of these mochines. I've had one for years, but only used it once. It clogged the bonnet up so fast that I couldn't even use it. Went through 3 bonnets in about as many minutes. Just what is the correct way to use one? Are they used for putting the wax on and taking it off? Would appreciate it if some of you guys who use one could give me a little instruction . I've been doing it by hand so long, I'm starting to feel like the karate kid (you know...wax a on...wax a off )
