Re: Electric emergency kit

When my brother worked at a hot rod shop they put in a few of those kits. Always seemed to be more trouble then they were worth.

The long handle makes for a good foot rest!

Re: Electric emergency kit

Can you change to the pedal style? The electric ones work, and once they are set up correctly, do work well. Just be prepared to modify and adjust every single piece of it, multiple times. For a high end build they are cool and give that extra o0o0o0. But the ones my brother installed (and I helped at times) were for customers just because they seen it in a magazine or TV show. It didn't fit an overall "high end/custom" theme so the amount of work and expense for them to install it was way over the top for a shoe box nova with a mild sbc and original paint.

Re: Electric emergency kit

I wonder how scary that is for an emergency stop, not just using it as a parking brake.

Re: Electric emergency kit

If you have to resort to using the PARKING brake in an emergency, your pucker factor has probably already got the upholstery bunched up . . . . .

Yep.... dunno who came up with the term "emergency brake".... it is a parking brake.
Engage it during a real emergency and you're pretty much guaranteed an even bigger emergency.

Re: Electric emergency kit

My brakes went out on my old 72 C10 Burb just south of Seattle years ago. I live between 30 and 40 miles north of there. Used the emergency brake all the way home in afternoon traffic … Yes there was a pucker factor.

I always thought those electric emergency brakes were pretty cool. Anything universal or made for one model but put in another are going to be modded. I say give it a shot.

I can imagine that electric actuator can't be regulated in any way, so although it may bring the truck to a stop once when you realize your brakes are out, it would not be good to use for limping home.

Musta been a fun drive home! What caused the brakes to fail?

I'v had to do the same once...not as far to get home though. Mechanical hand brake in my DD at the time... just drove slow with flashers.

This electric one would not have worked at all.

My failure was due to installer ( myself ) mistake on a Big Brake kit: inside wheel weights were slightly hitting braided brake line at full lock up front... it took about 4 months of driving before passenger side blew out. Got lucky, no crash.

Re: Electric emergency kit

I speak from the experience of having the master cylinder in my '67 fail on a downhill when approaching an intersection. I reached for the parking break while trying to shove the tranny into Reverse. I was successful in neither action, and the nose of the truck rolled under the trailer of a semi crossing the intersection at 40mph+ . . . .
