Which carb is for me?
Hey guys, I just bought a real rusty 79 Blazer for $800. The thing has a recently rebiult SB 400 with headers, an RV cam, performance ignition system, riser intake manifold, and only 6000 kms on the engine! I noticed when driving the old rust bucket home that the throttle likes to stick. It has the factory 4 barral carb on it, I could get another one from the junk yard for real cheap. But I was thinking of getting something with a little better performance. I do off-road my truck and drive up steep hills while doing so. I really like the sounds of the Holley Truck Avenger carb. But not too many around for cheap. There is also a Holly 600, and an Edelbrock 750 for sale locally at $100 each. Do you guys think I'm best to shell out the big $$ for the truck avenger or would one of these carbs do just as well? Or should I just go find another stocker?

If you are planning to use your Blazer for 4wheeling I would look into keeping the Q-jet. Q-jets are supposed to have the most stable float set-up for 4wheeling.

second that. I just bought a Holley rebuilt q-jet from summit for my 70. supposedly the q-jet does good on hills.

1970 K25, 8' stepside bed 350/465/205 44 up front, 60 in the rear 4.10s rolling on 33" Dunlop MTs 1986 K5, 350/465/208 Dana 60/14 bolt from a cucv 36" Super Swampers TSL/SX 1983 K20 w/ CUCV axles, 350/700R4/208 sitting on 37" Goodyears 1986 M1031 6.2 diesel, TH400/NP205 locker in the rear and a LS in the front, all stock for now..... 1986 K30, 350/400/205 dana 60 and 14 bolt. I kept the drivetrain. Body/bad and chassis are gone. 1981 K30, 350/465/205 dana 60 and dually 14 bolt. Has a G80, and a flat bed. Going to replace the flat bed. 1985 K20, 350/400/208 10 bolt and SF 14 bolt. I wonder where I can find some 1 tons. Hmmmmm

600 sounds good for a sbc, holley make a great kit for offroad that keeps the floats from shut'n off

Well I ended up buying a 670 cfm Holley Truck avenger off ebay for $200 US. A little more $$ than I was planning, but it's supposed to be the best off-road carb out there. Check here: http://www.holley.com/HiOctn/ProdLin...C/0-90670.html
I can barely wait to get this motor in my '70 GMC. Kinda sucks to pull the original 307 engine. It still runs OK just not much jam. The 400 should get me where I want to go. I'm putting the 307 into the Blazer. Should be able to recover near all the cost of the Blazer again, so I'll be getting a near free rebuilt 400. So I guess a $200 carb isn't that bad. Thanks for the replies guys. I'll let you know how this carb works once I get it all installed.
