Aftermarket push-in Trim Clips

I have done a fairly significant amount of modifications to trim clips here and there to get them to work but I am having troubles getting the push-in type to work like the upper tailgate trim uses. Any tips on getting these aftermarket clips to "lock in" (they come up short and will not go in far enough to engage)?

Mar-K would tell you the clips don't grab because of burrs in the metal and the holes should be de-burred. I think that's BS myself as NOS clips work fine. I had to resort to NOS clips to get my tailgate trim properly attached to the tailgate and the effort was expensive and time consuming.

Post a pic of the clips, what size hole do they go in?

Re: Aftermarket push-in Trim Clips

I had to put some type of shim under the clip so it would not flex/bend from going in the hole and attaching and denting the trim. First attempt I used rolled tape under the clip between the trim. Next I used some 3m trim tape thinking it is made for the elements. So far so good.

So putting this behind the clips sort of forced the clip to retain shape and engage with the hole. This may be the issue I am having, when I am pushing them in they are just flexing and not going in far enough to seat. Thanks for the advice. Also by 3M trim tape are you talking the double sided tape with the red backing that is removed?

Re: Aftermarket push-in Trim Clips

Thanks, I posted on that thread to get more info on the "flaring". I have one upper trim installed now that I didn't realize did not seat and has popped out on one end.
