One key to rule them all

Has anyone had there doors and glove box rekeyed so that they match the ignition? I am getting tired of fumbling around with 2 keys. I have been spoiled by one key and a clicker on my Honda

I tried on a Square body, and called a guy I was familiar with who had his own lock smith company.

Effectively no you can not. The ignition lock cylinder, and the door lock cylinder use different key blanks. Plus supposedly they do not interchange lock cylinders or adjustment pins. For lack of the right term.

Or atleast that is the answer I was given. After he played with it for awhile looking for interchange parts.

Maybe someone has figured it out, but I have not run across it as of yet. So when I get around to it. I want to get 2 Chevy trucks keyed the same so I only have one set to deal with.

I don't know about the glovebox but, my key unlocks the door and works in the ignition. I'm sure "lockdoc" sp? on here can offer more insight.

Member Lockdoc can do that for you.

My parents gifted me one of those aftermarket kits that use one key, but unfortunately, the quality of the kit is not that great. The little flaps on the door locks rarely close anymore

They actually should be the same key. That is, the doors and ignition. Trucks seldom came with a glovebox lock, if ever. Regardless, all factory lock cylinders can easily be recoded to work with one single key. As mentioned, look up "lockdoc" here on the forum.

Ok thanks. I had the door locks rekeyed once already (by the locksmith that used to be next to OSH) because they did not match each other. I did not think to match them to the ignition key at the time.

I'm pretty sure that these vehicles were single-key until '71. The different keys were meant to be a theft deterrent. Thieves would pull the lock cylinder out of a door with a slide hammer and grind a key, then come back and steal your ride with a key. Then, they just started busting the column to get to the release button.

You just talked to the wrong locksmith. I have been a locksmith since 1977 specializing in antique autos, trucks and motorcycles and I key square bodies to the same key all the time. I have even sold two or three keyed alike sets on here for the squares. You just have to replace your door lock cylinders with the OEM ones I have.

That would be until '72. '73 was the first year for the two key system for pickup trucks.

Yes, I had mine done too, glovebox and all, by my local locksmith. Works fine. I never did get the logic to using 2 keys. I always figured it had something to do with valet parking so they coldnt snoop around in the trunk and glovebox.

My '63 GMC has 2 keys. One for the door and the other for the ignition

Lockdoc is the man. My 72 is one key for all. Including the glovebox thanks to him.

My truck I have owned for almost 40 years has one key for doors ign and glove box. Just saying...

Kits are available at Brothers for one. Kit comes with keys and tumblers for doors ignition and glove box. A bit pricey at $120
