Re: Putting it all back together again..... build thread

Nice idea guys, looks like I have to build a set of them as my door is off just alittle bit. The areas that might be my problem are, a sprung door hinge, repro door, or the rocker is to narrow. Building those jacking bars will really help to move things around to the rite orientation...

Thanks for the help and the idea. J.

BTW, nice work and good progress!!!

Re: Putting it all back together again..... build thread

those bars put out allot of force too. I had my top secured with only a couple of vise grips and the bars would move the top when used!! I though I was (i probably WAS) bending the windshield frame. So i unbolted the top got it as close to square as I could, then put the top back on.

Re: Putting it all back together again..... build thread

started to put the floor and rocker area back in.

Ive had to do allot of trimming on the sheet metal but Its better to have the piece a little big than too small. A friend let me use his plasma cutter its called a Miller spectrum extreme. its really small like a lunch box, but works perfect.

way better than a cutting disk

I am making slip on floor supports into regular replacement supports I just started at it last night.

That rocker box needs to come off and the floor needs to move forward a little bit.

Re: Putting it all back together again..... build thread

we got the A pillar in on the drivers side. Wich was not a bad job. Getting the kick panel, firewall, floor, all the shtuff in there to line up nice is beating me down.

the top is on and the door gaps are all fine as it sits

I know if all these parts are not in correctly that door gap alignment (hell fender, windshield, top, outer rocker too) will be off when i take the cross brace and top off. then at that point with all the sheet metal welded in it will be tough to get it back lined up.

I ran out of propane too and my uninsulated shop is unbearable with out some heat and we really shouldn't weld on steel thats colder than 50F at the max. (anything truly structural IE asses are relying on the welds ... that is still to cold FYI)

here are the pics of the A pillar.

its the "journey not the destination" right???? right? ;p

Nice welds, wish I could do that. Your son is a trooper to be out in the cold, awesome to work along side of him.

Where's the nut plate for the hinge? Looks like you still have access from the back side

I took the plate out and cleaned it up, ran a tap through it and soaked it in oil. Its back in now the retainer spring is still good in there too.

Re: Putting it all back together again..... build thread

I broke my arm this summer and the thing has not healed up like it should. it still is not 100% but good enough to work and play on.
the drivers side is mostly done except for the front lower quarter panel

I think I can use a pick up part since i don't need the wheel arch, the pick up part is half the price of the "blazer" part.

here are the shot of the drivers side floor, floor support, some firewall hacking, kick panel and the RE-done A pillar.

I screwed the A pillar up the first time through. I learned that i need to mount the fender and make sure the stupid thing lines up with the hole in the bottom of the A pillar. DUH!! This is the first time i have ever done anything at all like this, I just have to learn the hard way sometimes.

Getting the kick panel to line up with the floor to line up with the floor support to the freaking A pillar, is a HUGE pain. The kick panel was the meanest one to get, its still not perfect but for me it works out fine.

All the parts in that area need to go on to line all that up, ALL the above named parts. I learned that the hard way too!

but it will only make the passenger side that much easier.

Re: Putting it all back together again..... build thread

I didn't get the floor support as tight to the floor as I wanted. That area is now kinda bumpy from getting welded.

but it is straight and the rust is gone and that is what i am looking for when its done.

Re: Putting it all back together again..... build thread

Hey Durrty looks good, don't see any rust, so you won. I have 2 patch panels from a pickup truck that might fill your needs, they're just sittin' here collecting dust. They go from the door all the way back to the wheel eyebrow. LMK if ya want them

Re: Putting it all back together again..... build thread

Ill send a PM about those patch panels today thanks for the offer.

here are a couple pics of the passenger side. There was a large hole under the rear seat bracket, the only thing that held it in place was the support plate under the floor. I could have ripped it out with my hands if i really wanted to. So i cut out a big square and welded in a piece of 12ga sheet.

BTW my boy welded in %90 of that thing, I came in and welded up a few of the larger gaps for him. He is good to go with a welding gun.

the passenger side looked better than the drivers but once i got to cutting out the cancer it ended up worse. Its a good thing the patch panels are as big as they are.

the PO decided to weld on his own sheet metal and use bondo to make it shaped like it was supposed to be. I tried to get a shot of how THICK it is on there.

Re: Putting it all back together again..... build thread

I finished the passenger floor and inner rocker. The outer rocker panel fits up terribly, so that's going to be a fun surgery. the drivers fit up like a glove.

Started to fit up the lower B and the front of the quarter panel there.

Re: Putting it all back together again..... build thread

Its a ford high pinion out of an 88 F350 I think he told me when i bought it. A 4x4 shop in Colorado cut and moved the diff over to the correct (GM) side. It has not ever been under a truck since the work was done, I can cut and build whatever if I need to.

Can someone point me to info on setting up the steering? I think those are high steer arms, I have never worked on steering from the ground up like this. There is a shop here in town that will do the work or sell me the parts to build it. I would rather build it myself so i can fix it when it breaks and be able to build it again if i want. I also don't want to end up on scarysteering.com or dead!
