Help with big block id stamp - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I am trying to decipher the id stamp on the BB in my 72 k20. It is pretty worn down and hard to read. I am unable to get to the back of the block to find the casting numbers for it. Was told it is a 454 installed in the mid-80's. Maybe imaging software can clean it up? Looks like TI017CGU? Looks to translate to a 1970 Impala/Caprice LS-5 390hp block made 10/17? Wouldn't that be cool...There is another unreadable stamp on the back part of the pad with a smaller font. Any help would be appreciated.

Looking to get correct short ram horn exhaust manifolds for the engine. I want to make sure I get the correct year.

well 454 has external balance flywheel and dampener so thats a super fast check . it the dampener has a extra notch on it cut out or added then its a 454 . otherwise its a 396 to 427 bbc .

Yup, it's a 454. Trying to find the year to get the correct shorty rams head exhaust manifolds. The original owner put on long tube headers and they are rubbing against the front drive shaft. Thanks for the reply!

Why do you need the exact year to be able to get exhaust manifolds? It is a Mark IV big block. All MK IV BBC manifolds will work. The chassis fitment is more important than the exact year of the engine.

Unless you're spinning that big block past 5k all the time stick with the iron manifolds and save years of headaches
