454 engine with a TH350 trans ok?

454 stroked to a 496 alum heads roller rockers 10.1 compression

Will a TH350 trans be ok with it?

That’s what came with my truck

Not hooked up yet so not running

If you're Gordon "Lightfoot", you'll be OK. If you're towing or going to do some burnouts, that trans is going to burn out.

I have a 700r4 behind a 454 it's doing fine, 3 years so far. A 350 would live if you drive civilized.

Drive civilized.
496 CID, 10:1 compression. I'll wager he's not planning on driving civilized.

THAT must be DELICIOUS!!

There must be many transmission companies (like Monster Transmissions) that can upgrade any transmission to the N-th degree...

Re: 454 engine with a TH350 trans ok?

Monster is a garbage company,I would suggest never getting a transmission from them. But OP, a TH350 can absolutely live behind that engine they are routinely built to hold 1000hp, would a TH400 be "better" maybe, but you already have the 350, you'll be fine with it. I'd suggest finding a local builder to go through it and reaching out to one of more reputable converter companies and see about upgrading your converter.

Re: 454 engine with a TH350 trans ok?

From what I've read, stock they handle up to about 400 lb/ft and properly built easily handle 600 lb/ft. I believe torque is the killer not HP.

true, and in a 2wd blazer traction is going to be your big killer overall. A competent builder shouldn't have problem getting a th350 to hold the power and torque though.

Stock the TH350 isn't really that impressive. They shift like most bone stock 60s automatics....sllloooowwwwlly. lol

But any good builder can make them awesome.

Re: 454 engine with a TH350 trans ok?

We have a th350 behind a 455 Pontiac that has pulled 440hp on a chassis dyno a half dozen times over the years and runs 11.20's at 122 mph on 255/60/15 Les Schwabs. No problems since installed 15k miles ago.
Our tranny guy said we would have to have a good case to start with and that not all cases were machined to tolerance when they were new. We ended up giving him 3 cores before he found one he liked.

Re: 454 engine with a TH350 trans ok?

A TH350 will be OK, not for all out, sticky tire performance driving, though...unless properly built...

A TH350 CAN be properly built to handle the power!!!

FYI, the Farm truck ran a TH350 for several years. I've seen the farm truck run 10's, AND it likely weighs 4500-plus pounds.

Here several years back, right before the "outlaws" became movie stars...I was at Noble, Oklahoma, at Thunder Valley, watching the street racing program the have/had. Farm Truck was there, along with some of the others...I asked the owner what trans he was using, he said a TH400. THis night of racing was one of the first with the TH400 trans. He told me he had run the TH350 for years. It did give up on him several years before, simply because it was a near stock trans. He had it properly built, had zero issues after that....He said he switched to the TH400, just for peace of mind....

Re: 454 engine with a TH350 trans ok?

Which ever way you go, get a converter matched to your combo, call up FTI, ATI, Huges, Yank, etc...not B&M and get a quiality converter spec'd around your combo and usage. It will make the whole combo work together, and the nice thing about Turbo transmissions, you can swap a converter from a th350 to th400 no problem, (unless you have a lock up 350 version)

Re: 454 engine with a TH350 trans ok?

I had the same decision to make just a few days ago. I decided to pull the 350 and go with the 400 . I don’t have the discipline to keep my foot out of it and didn’t want to worry about it. Plus I figured I can recoup some money by selling a good Th350 vs waiting till it nuked and is worthless.

Re: 454 engine with a TH350 trans ok?

I have one behind my 550hp 427sbc in my camaro and beat on it constantly with a 5k converter, it holds great.
