I think they should

put a gas filler pipe on both sides of a car or truck

so when I pull into a filling station I have way more options to drive right up to the pump and the hose will reach

anyone agree?

Re: I think they should

In the middle was nice, but I guess they want them on the side now. I think they should come around like home heating fuel delivery does and top us off every day for a flat monthly rate, for what it costs.

Re: I think they should

I wouldn't want it in the middle as a rear end collision would could be a fire bomb.. I prefer the tanks just before the rear axle ,,that is on cars and trucks with a rear axle,,,so Tim how do we go about our rigs topped off.

Re: I think they should

How about if they start making pump isles single lane with a pump on each side?

They could split the filler to gain one on each side. But that means in the future when guys are customizing these trucks they'll need to hide it in both rear side markers.

I don't know a good solution, but having fun with it anyway

Re: I think they should

There is a company in Metro Atlanta that will bring their smaller tanker truck to your location at home or business and fill your car or truck for you ,no idea what that would cost though .

Re: I think they should

Ever watch the "Red/Green" show on tv?
He sealed up a van,put the driving controls on top and used the entire van as a gas tank.It was to improve his gas mileage I believe.
It filled from the top!
BTW,most 73/87 GM pick-ups could be had with a tank on either side.Very convenient until you wanted to fill both at the same stop to fill up!
Or ,until some stupid news network decided to blow it up!

Re: I think they should

The first Model A I built had a set of Saddle Tanks behind the floor boards. They held 8 gallons and you had to fill from Both sides. When i would try to fill it from the same pump I needed a person to keep people from pulling in while I maneuvered around to fill the other side. I have Not met to many users of those that Really Liked them after they put them on.

Re: I think they should

I'm OK with one side. Luckily every vehicle I own is DS or rear fill so I don't go on the wrong side. I only have to fill my daily up every 3-4 weeks though and my toys get a full tank about once a month. I actually get gas for my lawnmower more often than my cars.

Re: I think they should

I read that years ago the manufactures of automobiles decided it was safer to fill a gas tank from the passenger side because the drivers side was close to the street or highway and one could get hit by a passing car ..

This was 2 lane highways and the filling stations were close to the road.

Re: I think they should

Not being an idiot (although that is up for debate ) I have never pulled into the wrong side. I think that's a good idea though, a filler door on both sides.

The rear-mounted filler was fine except you had to pull so far up to line up. My Pontiac's filler is under the license plate which has a hinge, at one time a common location.

Re: I think they should

The caprice still had a rear fill all the way until the 1996 Models. The wagons had a DS fill door, but the cars had the rear plate fill still.

Re: I think they should

My point is that practicully all cars are drivers side fillers,, anyway when I travel and stop at gas stations along the way I am some times backed up some 3 cars waiting for a turn at the pump ,, the pump hoses are not long enough any more to stretch across the car to get to the passenger side,, and with my truck I would have to throw it over the cab ,,still wouldnt reach.. and forget trying to hurry and get the the other side as some one comes out of no where and takes your spot.. I' m ranting arn't I .. I vote make a filler on both sides of the car or truck..

Re: I think they should

I have to agree, I don't care where, but put it at the same place on all vehicles. Also, put the dip stick in the same place on all vehicles. I don't care where, it can be next to the tail light, but at that place on all vehicles.

Re: I think they should

I don't care where they put it as long as we don't have to go thru the "gas wars" of the 70's again . I remember getting in line for gas at 3:00 am and waiting for hours to get to the pump for $5.00 max per car . Granted the gas was around .40 a gallon but we were driving these trucks for work everyday and some complain about their mileage today ! That's when locking gas caps became VERY popular .

Re: I think they should

That first picture was the later one. We went with even/odd tag numbers every other day. I don't know if that was a national thing. The local station owner didn't care what your tag number was if he knew you. Probably didn't care either way. I think all stations were closed on Sunday, too. I don't remember lines with that one. The first one was a mess. When lines were long I filled up at a station at the bottom of a long hill so I didn't need to run my engine.

My 64 had 3 tanks. Behind the seat and two behind the cab under the bed. Man I miss that truck.

Re: I think they should

In 79,I lived in south "Texas.
I worked for a big electrical contractor as an apprentice.
My company got a contract with the civil service to work on the levy pump stations and salt domes at Brian Beach,Tx.
My pay jumped from $5.00 an hour to about $13.00 an hour!
I was riding my 90 Honda to work, while I worked on top of about a million gallons of govt.crude stored in the salt domes!
We had a 76 Monte Carlo and that could be my wife in the first picture as that's what she did while I was at work.
I siphoned gas from the car to put in my Honda.

I do that with the truck now. I top it up when it gets about half a tank then siphon gas out of it for the lawn mower in the summer and snowblower in the winter. Sometimes in the winter I have to use the 2.5 gal cans because the roads are too sandy/salty to take the truck out, but mostly the truck is my "Tanker".

Well heck,,you got that problem solved ,,although you might be the guy who just ahead of me took all the rest of the diesel up and I had to find another fuel place to fill my truck ,,and I had to back out of a tight spot with my travel trailer.. thx alot other Larry,,, lol

This was a made up story ,,it really didnt happen ,,but I do have more problems with the travel trailer getting into the pumps at some stations and a filler on both sides would be more better..

Re: I think they should

Around here it seems the truck stops are gone and only tight little gas & go places for the trucks to get their diesel. Sometimes two or three dumps will pull in at the end of the day to fill. With only one out of tree islands having diesel pumps it jams the place up. They usually use the outer one so they don't have to come under the canopy. It's got to be a pain for them to get around the tight lot with knucklehead drivers scooting all around, as well as waiting for the other guy to fill. They jamb up 1/2 the lot sitting waiting and of course take forever to fill. Across the interstate, along the old hiway was a restaurant/filling station with a long pull through pump isle that was tractor trailer friendly. Was a truck stop back in the day. First the filling station guy hung it up and about ten years later the restaurant got sold and new owners didn't do well, so closed. It's funny, this town has grown 4x bigger, at least. Yet we have less services than when I first moved here. More of a bedroom community than the rural hub town for the region it was when I moved here. At the gas & go all the cars are facing the interstate in the morning and facing town in the evening... unless their filler is on the passenger side!

Both sides filling on the driver side is a great idea!
