Old YZ490s

So besides trucks, I like bikes. I had a couple older bikes and parted with them, so I needed more and got a 84 yz 490. The first pictures are of older bikes I had, 1972 Suzuki T250 hustler and 1982 YZ490.

Re: Old YZ490s

Nice bikes! My old neighbor in Florida is the original owner of this 1975 Kawasaki 900. I helped him install the engine after he got it rebuild. He bought all new tank, fenders and side panels with factory paint and decals.

Re: Old YZ490s

Nice machines guys! Here is a 74 Honda Elsinore MR50 I restored when my son was just born.

Kawasaki 900 with a kerker exhaust? Takes me back 30 years.

I have a line on a 1976 Penton but the guy thinks he has more than he does. Bike is worth restoring but I know what it will it will take and he does not.

Re: Old YZ490s

my experience with a YZ490 was when my friend put the motor in a YSR50 in 1992. a YSR50 was the baby crotch rocket with 12" wheels that were popular in the early 90s. it shifted upside down, it had a 9" extended swingarm, and a car rear tire from a festiva, and to start out you had to lay clear over the handlebars or the bike would just flip. he was bananas. I still have his ysr but no longer have the yz490 motor. crazy fast though

Re: Old YZ490s

During my young and dumb stage of life I used to desert race a 86 YZ 490 in central Utah. Then one fine day I got bucked off going way to fast, so much body damage to me, not the bike. When I could hold on it was fun, but what short power band.

My current dirt bike is a 2000 Suzuki DRZ 400E works great for me. Love single track trails in and around Jackson Hole Wy.

The funny thing is I dont ride motorcycles. My son does and he gets to enjoy it. I think I like the ability to get them for a reasonable price, get them up to par and running, and show them off. I have a quad and an old boat that I like to ride, my wife would kill me if I got on a bike.

The biggest bonus, its wayyy easier to store bikes than cars and trucks.

Diomain

Boat looks great. FYI I have been riding motorcycles both road and dirt for over 50 + years and off road I have never seen a death from riding a dirt bike however since atv's have come along I have seen 3. After an atv rolls over it rolls over the driver puncturing the upper body. When you fall of a dirt bike the bike and the rider typically separate with less injury to the rider. Parents somehow feel that if it has 4 wheels that it is safer than 2. my experience is just the opposite.

Go find a fire trail, go mid-week get about a 200 cc dirt bike and give it a go, keep the speed such you and enjoy the smell and feel the wind in your face, you'll be smiling big. Have the Mrs fallow in the tk, take a lunch make a picnic.

Keep on keepin on

Re: Old YZ490s

Nice yz. The first bike I ever rode was an IT 175. Not ideal for the first time ever on a bike as a teenager but I managed to not kill myself. I used to race motocross in the late nineties and early 00's. I definitely miss it. As far as old yamaha's, I would love to have a 77 or 78 tt500 in my garage. They are so hard to find though and if you do find a nice one, they sure ain't cheap.
