Re: 1972 K10 Disabled Veteran First Build

So, two days ago I beat the body lift blocks and I thought I was in the clear going to make progress. That's until I met this little guy:

We have been fighting for two days so I did this:

and used this:

and I won:

But I did notice both cab corners are being rub against by the bed:

Man I totally forgot about that tool. Used one a long time ago and thought then how I wanted one. And yes I'm taking it apart as far as I can. I want to be able to put it together and know it's ready for another 40 years.

Re: 1972 K10 Disabled Veteran First Build

I finally conquered the bed. If now I only had someone to help me get the floor pulled outside. That thing is heavy. Everything else I've been able to handle alone. And it's awkward being flimsy in the middle.

Re: 1972 K10 Disabled Veteran First Build

Just have to disconnect the two shifters and the cab should be ready to come off. I'm trying to figure out how logistically. The area that the truck is in is not wide enough for me to be able to lift the cab and wheel it away. So I either lift it up and push frame out from under it, or push it out and than take off the cab. Either way I doubt I'm going to be able to push it back in on my own. So decisions, decisions.

Re: 1972 K10 Disabled Veteran First Build

I have seen some members use cherry picker with 4X4 frame on top of the lift that would pivot on the lift run the 4x4 frame through the door opening and lift the cab off then roll the frame out from under it. the lift should be center in the cab front to back and side to side.

Re: 1972 K10 Disabled Veteran First Build

My neighbor pulled through for me an hour ago and stopped by with his tractor. We successfully removed the cab. Nothing dropped or bent as far as I can tell. The first couple pictures are from me holding the strap with one hand and taking a picture with the other.

Re: 1972 K10 Disabled Veteran First Build

I'm alive!!! Survived some personal issues and getting back on track. The machine shop was a waste of time and money so I'm back to searching for an engine. This will sound pretty uneventful for most but today I removed my first engine and transmission. I didn't break anything on me, the truck, or the engine so I'm feeling pretty proud of myself. Couple things I will remember the next time, I didn't drain the transmission prior to disconnecting it, made a mess, and didn't start out with the leveler all the way towards the transmission, that little handle is hard to turn with the weight on it on one end. Hopefully I'll be back to making some progress.

Re: 1972 K10 Disabled Veteran First Build

What type of output brake is that on the 205? Just wondering if it's a kit or the PO built something.
Thanks,
Roger

It is the e brake. The PO installed a disc and mechanical caliper off a cushman truck.

Thanks Nathan, was wondering. Looks like a pretty clean setup. Might have to look into that when I convert the rears to disc.

Re: 1972 K10 Disabled Veteran First Build

Just read this whole thread. I just bought a 71 K10 to slowly build into a do it all rig also. It has an Sm 465/350 and my thoughts are Holley fuel injection, NV4500 and beefier axles.

Right now I have a newer Jeep and truck so I want to build a 4x4 truck to replace them both.

...anyways I have always had a Jeep to wheel all over the southwest. I'm hoping this will work just as well. A buddy used to go in his 76' K5 Blazer and it worked well. If this is the kind of thing you are building your truck for lemme know. You (or anyone) is welcome!

Re: 1972 K10 Disabled Veteran First Build

Anyone know what these studs are for? Other than looking studly. There are three of them all on the drivers side front axle. I know the axle is a Dana 44 but other than that I'm not sure. Any advice on what I should keep and what I should replace as I start the rebuilding process would be great. Whoever put together the passenger side hub forgot one of the locking clips. I'm glad I'm going through the whole truck. I have found too many things that have made me say "I'm glad I found that now."
