Re: My new toy (long story)

Cypress, I don't know why I didn't remember this before, but I think I know someone who once owned your Chevelle. I used to work for a guy in the Little York/Antoine area. This yellow Chevelle used to sit at the auto shop down the street and one of my co-worker's bought it for 4 thousand. Less than one month later, he wrecked the car when someone ran a red light. The front end was messed up and I don't know what ever happened to the car. If it's the same car, that might explain the bad paint job. Does it look like the front end was the only part painted? Jeff's car was identical to yours right down to the Cragars. Probably no way to ever know for sure. From your description of the seller, I don't know if I would believe his story or not.

Re: My new toy (long story)

BraveDave.
Not this one, the front clip looks all original, and all the paper work I have accounts for just about every year from about 1979 until last year,
I mean this guy kept every regristration reciept, not to mention the all the service work,
This guy had the compressor, evap, and condenser changed out at least 7 times that I can count. Its on its 4th 350, on its 6th transmission, its 3rd rear-end. Countless wiring service tickets, and too many to count tires.

Re: My new toy (long story)

Green,
I looked it up on the GM Restoration site.
Starting in 1971 you could buy the Chevelle with the SS package with either the 307, 350, 396, or 454.
In 1972 the same options were availabe but HP was cut down tremendously. the 350 was a dog at 190 HP, even the badboy 454 was toned down to a meare 270 HP... Quite different than the 1970 model SS. That was the fastest GM ever made the Chevelle and El Camino, the SS396 package produced a whooping 360 HP !!!!!!!!
It was the oil crisis and all that crap when GM started cutting out HP...I am too young to remember, in 72 I was 4 years old.. But I do remember "odd and even" days. Remember that??

Re: My new toy (long story)

looks like you have a 4 sale sign in the back window already or is that the PO.
Don't sell it. You will never get a good deal like that again.

Re: My new toy (long story)

Cypress, nicely done on the research. I own a '70 SS and I thought the same rules applied to '71 and '72. In '70 I believe they have four different engine options available, two 396's and two 454's, with the LS6 454 being rated at 450hp, everyone says they rated it low for insurance and it was closer to 500. Oh, to have the LS6.
As far as being too young and only being 4 when it was 1972, well, I was 4 in 1986
Like I said before, nice ride. It is in much better shape than most of what you see out there. I listen to the "old guys" and am never going to let mine go. You do the same!

Re: My new toy (long story)

HOLY CRAP!!!!! My brother just bought a 72 Chevelle clone-SS for $9,900, it's a nice car but it's not THAT nice! You sir, are a lucky SOB. I think I remember seeing that K5 you stopped to look at when I drove back from Dallas on Monday. If I had only known what was hiding behind it........

One of these days I'd like to come by and see that best. Great find, and good luck with it!

Re: My new toy (long story)

that is my dream car.

you are correct on the full restore price, buit w/protecto plate if it's numbers matching and a real SS, after frame off resto, you're talking upwards of $60k or more.

i would crap my pants if i could get away with that kind of price. i'll give you $9k for it

Re: My new toy (long story)

Definitely a good find..... I remember about 5 years ago me and my dad found my 1970 SS. Very Rusty, but Ls5 car. My how we got a steal for it, and now looking how much just straight malibus go for... it's crazy. Yes, you could get a 350 in a 1972 SS ... It will say SS on the outside of the car, but won't have any badging on it, neither will a 402 BB. Only the 454 cars got engine displacement emblems on the outside of the cars. It looks to have a decent paintjob, The stripes aren't factory though..... They will look like this.... STill a very nice find, and you can always restore it later, just too bad it wasn't a BIG BLOCK...... Nothing like a BIG BLOCK CHEVELLE Still trying to talk a few guys out of their ls6 projects..... One day,,, maybe. Trevor

Re: My new toy (long story)

Actually 72 was the year the HP ratings changed from GROSS to NET.

The engines weren't any weaker than 71. They just measured them differently, more realistically.

Re: My new toy (long story)

Trevor,
Yea, I noticed the Stripes after I got home, But its OK, It'll get a ground up anyway-- sooner or later-- almost done with my 72 cheyenne I mean I am at 98.6%, so not much longer, then off comes the body on ol yeller!!
It does need a paint job thought, I mean the paint itself is good, but in spots it looks like they painted over the dirt... I mean bad, bad prep work.
Thanks for the nice comments -- that goes for all of you.. I will keep yall posted
