How do I get this stupid gas tank rubber donut thingy in without destroying my paint?

take it out with or after removing your tank, take all the tank bolts out and get it free and lift it up to about a 45degree angle and a little tug(or someone pushin the spout in) will get it and the gasket is easy there. this is all easy if ur tank is EMPTY :-D

My heart goes out to you! I've tried without sucsess. I think mine was sun hardened. I think you'll have better luck with just buying a new one.

Or this gives you a excuss to shave it and put a blazer tank in!

it'd be a bear to get one in with the tank bolted down, try dipping the grommet in some strong soapy water (mostly soap) and working it in there.

I PUT EM IN A BOWL OF WATER & MICROWAVE EM TILL THERE TOO HOT TO TOUCH, THEN DRY EM OFF WITH A TOWELL, PUT SOME SPRAY SILCONE ON THE REAR LIP & USE PAINT STIR STICKS TO PUSH EM IN. THEY'RE A REAL B!TCH TO GET IN. IF ANYONES GOT AN EASIER WAY, I'D SURE LIKE TO HEAR ABOUT IT.

I do have a new one. The old one was mostly disintegrated when i took it out. I have some new seat belts so I have to take the seat out ... again anyway so it might wait a week until the gas runs out.

I used a razor blade and carefully cut the old one out before I removed the tank. Then install the new one in the cab and coat the inside with liquid dish detergent. Slide the tank in. I had no trouble doing mine all by myself.

I put my tank in as Bob's 409 does. You can do it by yourself with an empty tank. The fill tube will slide through the donut with little effort.
