Specifics on this 1971 c10 would be greatly appreciated

So here goes, my Step Father recently passed away. He was a Purple Heart Vietnam Vet and for some reason I dont know exactly he would get almost 5,000 a month from the government. He died die from the agent orange exposure but anyways he would always start new projects that he could never finish in two lives. besides this 71 c10 I have a 68 Beatle he was converting into a baja bug. Back to the truck, I had a mechanic over for a day and we started it up and it was the greatest sounding engine I have ever heard in my life. Tough as ****! We have everything to finish it besides the radiator which was stolen. To my questions. I am not a full on mechanic, I mean I do all my own car upkeep but when looking at this truck it is all custom. I'd like to know the engine type, whst to refer to it as and an estimated value on just the engine and also the truck complete with engine, new tires, toolbox, new exhaust system, etc. Thanks for your time

That looks like a good start for someone. It's a small block gm motor, likely a 350. When I have more time later today I can help a little more.

That engine (probably a 350) either came out of a 1973 or later truck, or a car. It has a long water pump and the alternator on the wrong side.

All of these V8 trucks, whether small block or big block, came with a short water pump and the alternator on the drivers side.

There is a "pad" on the engine behind the alternator. If you can get us the code we can probably tell you exactly what that engine is. The attached picture is a pad off another engine so you know what you are looking for.

What does the truck have for rust and body damage? Check the lower cab corners, rocker panels, and inside the cab around the windshield.

Hard to guess its value without looking at pics of the interior, undercarriage, tailgate etc. Also, how much rust and pitting? Looks like you're on the coast.

Can't tell the trim level because the badge says Cheyenne while the windshield without stainless steel trim and the marker lenses say standard Custom. If you really want to know its value, take some more pics and one of the SPID on the glove box door. As for the engine (that bay looks great), it really depends what was done. I'd think the low end is $1000ish, but I'm no expert.

Sorry for your loss. My step father (85) is a Marine Lt. Colonel. He served three Vietnam tours. Smokes like a chimney, but to this day he has the walking gait of a 55 year old.

It's pretty common. Usually when someone swaps out an I-6 or just doesn't care to retain all the short water pump stuff, and lets it go with the old engine. Later model rigs had a different alternator set up with a long water pump. So to keep all the belts lined up correctly, cats will just stick with the long pump and not have to change everything over to belts and brackets for a short pump.
