Fan clutch tightening
Replacing the water pump and fan clutch on my 02 silverado.Im having hell judging how tight the nut is attaching it to the waster pump.I had a thick piece of copper wire going into the pulley and wrapped around an alternator bolt and it snapped it.From what I have read this nut is unlikely to loosen it's self.Is this true?I know the old one wasn't too terribly hard to remove.IMG_20201011_112008.jpg

Re: Fan clutch tightening
On a petrol engine, they do not have to be tightened much.
The issue comes in when the engine is switched off. The compression of a petrol engine is low compared to a diesel engine and therefore, when switching a petrol engine off, it takes "much" longer to come to standstill than a diesel engine - which decelerates to standstill much more rapidly (due to its high compression) than a petrol engine and thus the inertia of the spinning fan clutch could undo itself. That's why the risk of the risk of the fan clutch undoing itself is more of an issue on diesel engines where they must be tightened well.
