And I started wondering, what happened to the original tooling that made the quarter panels in the first place? Was it destroyed? Missing? What? Do we know?

What about 'other' tooling, like the stuff used to make those funky black '68 hubcaps, etc...?

Does ANYONE know the answer to this? Doesn't have to be Paul, I'm just curious about the original tooling.

In most instances GM's original tooling is worn out and either needs repaired or replaced, and even though GM's tooling needs repaired or replaced GM still wants outrageous premium prices for the tooling and in most instances it is leased and besides high lease price they want 10-20% of all sales made with the tooling, and even when they do sell it outright they still want 10%-20% of all sales of the product made with there original tooling. So you pay a fortune to GM on getting to use their tooling, spend another fortune getting tooling repaired or worse replaced if to far gone to repair, then they have there hand out for 10-20% of sales from every piece produced.
Costs far less just to make new tooling from pristine or NOS pieces and leave GM out of the picture. Then when product is manufactured it is able to sell at far more reasonable rates due to not having a extra 10-20% added to price to pay to GM.
So essentially its like this GM says give us $250,000.00-$750,000.00 for our tooling, then spend possibly the same repairing it, or just start from scratch and have maybe $250,000.00 in making new tooling.
Also to begin with our manufacturer will only make portions of the rear quarter panels to be used as patch panels not the entire rear quarter panel so the tooling for the entire piece will not be needed.

I agree with Paul, the expense would be alot. Hopefully my plant manager might locate some old dies if they wasn't all scraped out years ago.
