Yes. The way it was explained to me was that the old style 'skipped', ie the 'teeth' did not mesh right and the cable is flexible so unitl it got going it was flaky but they say the new 30slot unit does not have those issues.

Shon & TEXAS 68, thanks for the info. I wonder if with this new setup if having a little bend in the cable is as critical and if it makes less noise?

I am going to guess that the staighter the better. even if you look at the factory set up, not any harsh bends in it, or my set up doesnt. As for the motor sound, just a product of the unit which sux but not many other options.....

I have been using mine as a DD and I like it!
and when you set it up right it's dead on by the radar.

my buddy has one in his 80 malibu with a t56, only problem encountered is the cable was being pushed down a little by the wiring harness behind the dash and the box couldnt overcome the pressure, aka no speedo. got the wiring routed away from it and has been perfect. its mounted on the drivers inner fender for a straight shot to the speedo head. cars too loud to hear anything from that little box

Sorry for digging up an old thread but I thought I'd share my experience.

I installed one of the new style 30 slot cable x's a few weeks back in my 82 c10, its running an AW30-40LE box (jeep cherokee, toyota etc) with a 4 pulse per rev VSS output. This equates to a pulse per mile figure of 760 or so.

My speedo jumps around all over the show for the first 10 minutes driving (it reads bang on double speed for the first couple of miles), this could be due to the very low pulse count or also me not having the cable as straight as it could be. Either way it wakes up/warms up after a while and reads just fine.

I have the box under the dash and haven't really heard it over the engine noise.

Im happy with the unit and will make some changes and see how it goes.
