Stock style tachometers

I'm adding a new OEM style 5000 RPM tach to a 72 C10 with a HEI ignition. My question here is can this tach work (without burning up) with just a filter in line, or maybe adding a in tach, replacement circit board that I see advertised? I get mixed messages (even this forum) on this, some retailers say the new tach's will work ok, others say they will not, Dynacorn who makes them says definitely not! Some sources say just a filter is ok. Have heard nothing on the replacement boards though but that's another $50. that I might not need to spend. Any imputs out there?

Re: Stock style tachometers

Just installed a orig factory cluster in my 72. All I did was hooka red wire from fuse box to hot side of tach and ran a brown wire to the tack side of HEI. Everything worked as it should. Don't know how accurate it is but those tachs weren't designed for accuracy they were designed for use with PTO's to not over rev.
