Throttle linkage 6cyl to V8

I'm almost complete with my 6 cyl to v8 swap on my 70 GMC. I was wondering is there a different setup for the throttle linkage for a V8 then the 6 cyl because my throttle rod extends through the fire wall. I'm having problems trying to find a way to hook up my universal throttle cable to my throttle linkage. Looks like the throttle cable is supposed to go through the fire wall and my set up is already in front of it. Also I'm running a Holley 670 avenger carb. Any help will be appreciated Thanks!

Re: Throttle linkage 6cyl to V8

I need some clarification. A 1970 would have been equipped with a throttle rod, but you also mention a cable. Which way are you planning to go? If it's going to be a rod, I think all you may need is a correct length rod (not sure they were different). I also have a 670 Avenger on my 1969 with a GM crate 350 using the original 350 rod. I may have a spare you can have (free) if there's a reasonable way to mail it.

Re: Throttle linkage 6cyl to V8

Thanks for the reply maybe that's what I need a stock throttle rod. It looks like if I used a cable it would be very short. If your willing I could give that a try.

I'm willing. However, it'll be a few days since I'm 140 miles from my parts stash. I can also post some pics. I did have to put a slight bend in my throttle rod to compensate for a Lokar kickdown switch bracket I fabricated or my TH400. What transmission are you running?

Re: Throttle linkage 6cyl to V8

Can you post a pic of the linkage coming through the firewall from your accelerator if you are not sure it was set up for a rod?

Re: Throttle linkage 6cyl to V8

I'm going to run a 700r4 I have the detent cable hooked up right now to the Holley bracket but I might have to modify the rear bracket by removing the throttle cable portion of it to use a rod. I will post pictures later today because I'm at work at the moment. I do believe now it set up for a rod since the throttle pedal bracket/rod passes through the firewall.

Re: Throttle linkage 6cyl to V8

My 70 c10 was originally inline 6, but I swapped in a v8. The factory throttle linkage was a solid rod mounted to the fire wall that pivoted off the pedal. I made my own linkage with a piece of rod, threading the ends and placing rod ends on it. I just had to measure the length to make sure I could open throttle fully.

Re: Throttle linkage 6cyl to V8

If you still have the stock throttle rod and its too short going from 6 th 8 cyl. you can always lengthen it by cutting it and slipping on a piece of steel brake line, and weld and grind it smooth like I did, or take FirstOwner69 up on his generous offer....

Re: Throttle linkage 6cyl to V8

Seems like the perfect time to go to a cable type setup. You have the cable already , just need the gas pedal out of a later truck. It's not that difficult to do.

Re: Throttle linkage 6cyl to V8

1972 (and maybe 1971) had throttle cables from the factory. You could switch to a '72 pedal and cable if you wanted.

Other than that it's a throttle rod that can be bent or adjusted to make it work with almost any setup.

I decided to go with building my own route. So far so good I'm making quick progress. Thanks for everyone for helping out.

Could you give some details on the size rod and fittings you used to build this

I did one for mine with threaded rod and him joints. The rod was 1/4" fine thread and the joints had 1/4" holes and 1/4" female fine threads. I got the helm joints on Ebay and the threaded rod at the local mom and pop hardware store.

If you look close you can see it in the picture.

I just got finished taking it out and putting in a cable and the later style pedal from Lokar.
