1972 GMC oil

Hey guys, i bought a 72 gmc that i found out has a 76 vette engine in it. its a 350 thats been rebuilt and has about 10000 - 15000 miles on it. the transmission it a turbo 350 that rebuilt with about the same miles, not sure if its original or the vettes or what, but i was curious how many quarts of oil that engine takes. I imagine 5 or 6? and what oil is best for the engine in y'alls opinion. Thanks

Stock 350 with a stock oil pan will be 5 quarts.

Since it is a "corvette" engine you will need the special corvette oil. It's kind of expensive but is required for the special corvette racing components in the engine.

Just 5 quarts of 10w 30 will be fine. You can run synthetic or dino oil. Whatever your budget will allow.

Capacity is 4qt in the pan, 1 in the filter, for a total of 5. If you're going to change your own oil, do it just the same. Top of your filter, then put the rest of that quart, plus 4 more in the engine.

I run Valvoline 10w30, non synthetic because I change my oil often so I don't need to spend extra money. I use Bosche filters too.

One thing is certain with oil, there's over a thousand different combinations from people that swear their combination works best, so that equals over a 1000 best combinations available.

I'll leave this 1976 Corvette engine info here for you too.

Not to contradict but, I just put the filter on and fill with 5 qts. No issues from that ever. The oil pump picks up from the pan you just filled. Figure later vehicles have sideways filters you can't fill first...or remove without making a mess. I hate changing oil in my '90s 44wds. The driveshaft is directly below the filter so you can't whip it out real quick. And the '92 was a diesel. Yeah, oil turns to black paint in 100 miles

Yeah my 250 is horizontal. I always chuckle when people fill the filter with oil. But whatever gives you peace of mind.

People can argue all day about which brand oil is best, but in my opinion any decent oil will work fine. The important thing is to change every few thousand miles or few months and don't let it get low on oil. I don't see a lot of reports of engine failure due to oil problems, it's mainly when it runs out of oil.

EARNHARDT#3, I totally agree with your signature about hating to hear somebody call a distributor a "dizzy". In over 20 years as a professional auto tech, I have never heard another person in the business call it that. I've only seen it in forums.

What bugs me is when people call the air filter the breather. There are air filters and there are breathers, which are generally vents, when talking engines. Dizzy is a nick name, breather for an air cleaner is misnaming. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's how I know it.

Then there's the front rear on a 4wd. A what?? I call the rear a rear and the front axle is just that. 2wds don't have a front axles, at least not since 1960. Technically it's a front drive axle but people always understand when I just call it an axle.

I have the original 402 in my C20 with just under 38k original miles. I run 5w30 Mobil 1. Oil pressure is the exact same as with 20w50 Valvoline VR1, but gas mileage improved and it runs smoother.
