Thinking of Going Rear Disc Brakes?

By now I can only imagine that there has been alot of different setups that have been tried by this boards members, what are some of the companys or conversions that are being considered the best, cleanest, most complete kits etc. Thanks, Picture welcome. John

Check my build thread below and you can see my set up. I bought it from Blackbirds. Easy and clean install and they work well however, I do need to get an adjustable valve as they lock right before the fronts do on a "panic" type stop.

I put rear disks on for no other reason than the "bling" factor.

You might do some research cause I was thinking of doing the same thing.. I guess some of the older camaros, impala, cadillacs have a 5x5 pattern and they make a bracket to bolt on the 12 bolt rears.. That is your cheapest way.

Not at all. they bolted right up.

I've tossed around the idea of using some dirt track stuff and doing a rear brake upgrade using metric calipers and parts from speedway. They have a weld on bracket that mounts the caliper and comes with rotors and hats with different offsets.

I used a mid 70s full size Tbird 9". 5x5 bolt pattern, knock off the mounting brackets and weld on the axle pads. The stock ebrake cables worked!!!!

I used LT1 camaro calipers, mid 90s caprice drill/slotted rotors, and brackets to mount the calipers from another board memeber (glock....somethingorother)

I used the CPP kit to replace my entire braking system. Master cylinder, power booster, and upgraded all four discs and it worked great. Comes with everything you need.

I could have found a little cheaper way, but didn't want to take the time and research all the little parts and pieces I'd needed to buy separately. I'm a one-stop-shop kinda guy...Give me everything I need to do an install quickly and efficiently. I hate running to the shop 15 times to pick up extra crap.

I'll check out these places and start from there. I brain farted and threw away all the rear brake parts, drums, e-brake pieces, and hardware for my 70 build. So I'm reserching alternatives before I spend a bunch of $ Which brings up another question, how big of rear rim are you guys running, I already am finding it hard to get the diameter drag slicks I want in anthing other than 15" Thanks guys.

It's been almost two years and I don't really remember. I bought it with alot of other stuff at the same time so it's really fuzzy what the brakes alone would have been.

I do know I upgraded to slotted and drilled rotors, which was a very good decision. They look awesome, but I didn't upgrade to their anodized/painted calilpers. I bought a hi-temp epoxy paint kit online and painted the calipers myself before install. It's really easy to paint when everything is already clean. Painted the hubs on the rotors as well so I didn't see all that rust through the wheel when I get my big uns.

I upgraded to power steering, dual electric fans, vintage air, serpentine belt kit, 3/5 drop, etc. etc. at the same time. All in was about $6k in parts if I remember correctly. Did everything thru Vintage Air and CPP and was very pleased with the quality of the kits they put together.

John, I've got all my rear drum pieces in the garage. Sounds like you're making the move to discs, but let me know if you need something and we can work out a deal.

Stay away from the Master Power Brakes "kit". I know because I bought one.
You pay for parts you don't need,don't fit, and I'm still having issues with mine, two and a half years later.Stick with board vendors.

Thanks texasduffer I,m going through a deal with a board member for his newer drums backing plates and hard ware, if it all works I'll be good for now if not I maybe looking you up. As for the discs I still may go this route in order to shave rotating and unsprung weight for racing purposes. Blackbirds dose not share verymuch info on their site I'm sure they have reasons for it. I hate the pay and find out later what I bought deals.
