Odd's are you'll need a new tumbler, because you cant lock the door then shut it.

no you cant lock these doors then shut them // if it wont lock with the key try some wd-40 or lock ease sometimes moving parts work a bit better if lubricated every 30years or so

Sounds like the lock rod came off. You'll need to pull the door panel off to check.

dito..these trucks only lock with the key after the door is closed..

you might try pushing in on the door while you turn the key..to compress the weatherstrip..

my passenger side locks fine with the door closed. the drivers side i have to push in on the door a little to turn the key..it's fine for me..but the wife has trouble with it

Re: Doors won't lock

It's only a couple clips, half a dozen screws, and maybe a flashlight to see what's really going on in there.

Spary some penetrating oil on things and I bet you'll be good to go for another 35 years. There is a little pivot arm (non-technical name) that has a large surface contact area in it's pivot point and that one is especially susceptible to freezing up with a little dry corrosion. Kind of hard to explain, but you'll see the one I'm talking about. All it takes is a little lube - not WD40 - you want something that will leave some lube behind but still wick into unexposed areas like pentrating oil does. "PB Blaster" is great stuff for this kind of work.

Re: Doors won't lock

Then you should be able to close it with Mark's tip. Just push on the door while you lock it, it should work. They must have replaced the weatherstripping when they repainted the truck.

Re: Doors won't lock

I had to do the "push in & up" thing with both doors on my 71. I replaced both the latch assemblys on the doors and they lock great now!

Re: Doors won't lock

Just an idea, but can open the door then lock the door, then push in on the door handle button and then shut the door and it stay locked? I know some older cars you can do that with but not sure if it applies to these trucks. I don't dare try it with mine because I have no keys for my door locks. I'm waiting for my new door panels to come in before I change them.

nope i tried that when i first got mine before i learned that its a safety thing the only way to lock the doors is with them closed by using the key or pushing the lock down from the inside
