In my 66 stepside, I did a total custom set up and am pushing 7 speakers in that cab.
In my 64 tow truck I am going to shoot for maintaining a period correct look, but still have premium sound so in that I am going to have to get creative. I have also started stock piling stuff for that.

So the point of what I am asking back to you is this:
How much modifiying do you want to do, or are willing to do?
I'm ok with modifying. I am probably keeping the bench seat and maybe the interior gas tank...atleast for awhile. Any pics of what you or others have done in these trucks would be appreciated.

Re: 402 shortbox build!

This is the stereo system I installed, all Pioneer.
The only thing not in this photo is the 2" spot tweeters.

Those are shown here in final install on a domelight pedestle I made.

The 5.5" mids were mounted in these center console panels.

Size: 53.8 KB

There were previous holes for 5 or 6" speakers in the doors prior, but I decided the 6x9" would go good there, so I counter sunk the top edge of the speaker panel for a better angle for the soundwaves.
Name: 10apr13 d-side door inside painted (2).jpg

Finally the Amp and Capacitor went behind the seat with the 12" sub.

The music in this video is not dubbed in, it is playing on the stereo.

The spot tweeters came with small inclosures that you cannot see, but I left them incorporated in the pedestle mount. The 5.5 and the 6x9 speakers all got foam baffles, and the 12" sub was enclosed and packed with synthetic stuffed animal/pillow batting.

I hope this helps you some, I know other folk around here have inspired me immensly so it would be nice to pass some of that along....
All these photos and videos are hyper linked on Page 1 of my build in a Table of Contents, please feel free to take a look and steal or improve on any ideas you see there !!!

Good Luck

Re: 402 shortbox build!

Those tweeters so close to your head (I am 6' tall) really bring the higher range instruments out, like highhats, cymballs, triangles, and any xylophones which makes it a real treat.

I was in the school band growing up and since I miss it, I like making my audio systems seem like I am back "in" the band.

Glad you liked it, hope to see what you come up with in the near future !!

Re: 402 shortbox build!

How long are your heater hoses? Im fabbing up some stainless AN hose from the waterpump/intake to the core. Its parts for my big block swap thats a few months off and some lengths would be great if you could help out.

And congrats on getting the engine dropped in. Ill be a few months behind you.

Re: 402 shortbox build!

Thanks, I really appreciate it. The AN hoses can get expensive when you start buying extra feet of it. Its around $4-8 a foot depending on size

Re: 402 shortbox build!

Got the 400 turbo in over the weekend. Maybe you guys can help me figure out why I couldn't mount the rear trans mount where it should... It put the motor at a severe angle to the rear so I slid it forward and drilled two holes thru the bar and mounted it on top and it sits as it should.

Re: 402 shortbox build!

Here's a pic of how I had to use the crossmember for the motor to sit right. (not leaning back)

Re: 402 shortbox build!

Its been awhile since I have posted on my progress (had a little mishap grinding some rust without saftety glasses... bad idea LOL) But anyway I have got my 18" rims and tires on the truck. Had to get some wheel spacers and swap out all of the studs to make them work but they look nice. Went with Nitto tires. Also installed a set of 4" drop springs in the rear and the truck sits nice and level with the front now. I'll be adding a set of air shocks to keep it level when loaded or towing a small trailer etc.
I found a neat in cab air shock controller/compressor from air lift that will allow me to adjust the shocks as needed without needing to find a gas station to fill them up. I will be posting pics of the install soon.

Re: 402 shortbox build!

I was planning on doing 4" drop springs in the back as well on my 63... with a one piece driveline... I am also running an m-21 tranny which is about the same length as a trubo automatic... did you have any issues with going down 4" in the back without notching the frame??

Re: 402 shortbox build!

The engine is supposed to be leaning back, or down in the rear 3-4 degrees. The carburator pad should be level or slightly down to the rear. The engine and trans also needs to be parallel to the pinion angle.

Re: 402 shortbox build!

Nice build....You have got some great things going on

-As far my vote for about the gas tank......I like them out of the cab for a couple of reasons....You fill to fast or too close to the top of the tank and it burps all over the side of the truck and it smells like fuel for days...( and with a big block your going to be fueling alot lol....this I know )

- I am going through a how fast can you make a truck go phase ....So having the tank out back makes a difference in hooking up back there for sure.

- I like the extra room for 12" subs back there....and i either sink the amps into the center of the sub box or I place the amps under the seats.

For stereo...
If you run a Double Din you either have to put it under the dash......order a short wiper motor ( pricey ) or put a cabel drive wiper motor in...

Speakers...
I do the kick pods thing....I am a big fan of that look

Subs...
I like to stack what ever I can behind the seat....

But thats just the way I roll , it's personal taste.....I will be back to see how it turns out.
