OBD II scanner port problem? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

The other day, my wife's '04 Suburban "check engine" light came on. Over the weekend, I went to my local AutoZone to have the computer scanned to find out what the problem is. The guy plug the scanner in and it was not responsive. The scanner would not even come on. AutoZone guy thought that it was a computer problem or a bad OBD II port connector problem.

Has anyone else had this problem...or know what the problem is?

Does your cig lighter work? I believe they share the same fuse in 03+, scanner won't read unless that fuse is good.

I will check that, I want to say it does because we use some of the outlets to power things like GPS, phone charger, etc., but there might be one that itsnt working.

change out teh cigar fuse under the hood the cig ligter and obd2 share the same fuse on just aboute very vechile but the gms are bad about blowing that fuse

truckdude239....you answered my next question without even asking it. I checked the cig lighter and it is not working. So I looked for the blown fuse on the driver's side of the dash and couldnt find it.....and thats why, its under the hood.

I have fixed one problem and now know what the other problem is. Changing out the blown 15amp fuse under the hood fixed the cigarette lighter and the OBD port as well. Hooked up a scanner to it, and everything functions like it should.
Now for the check engine light. The scanner code is "P0442". It also said that it was an "emissions leak". So I am guessing that its refering to the "evaporated emissions leak" deal where it could be several things, one of them being the "loose gas cap".
I have cleared the code, and checked the gas cap and for now, all is well.

90 times out of 100, p0442 is because of a evap canister vent solenoid. I musta replaced 855493 of them at work. ALSO if you are in the habbit of over fueling the truck. It will saturate the evap canister too and if thats the case replace the charcoal canister and vent solenolid. its not the gas cap... if it was a faulty or loose cap you would get a p0440 code....trust me....

We haven't been overfilling the tank...it's hard enough to keep a half tank in a suburban!

Not to say that the PO didnt overfill it. We have had the burb for almost a year now, so I am learning about the truck as problems arise.

So far the light hasn't come back on, but then again, its only been a few days.

Do you have the GM part #'s for the solenoid and canister handy? Not a big deal if you don't.

pm me your vin number and I will get you the part numbers. no problem. then just order them from gm parts direct... They sell the parts to public for what the dealership gets them for plus shipping. If you have had it a year and never overfilled it. I would just put the updated vent solenoid in it.. I can fax you instructions on installation. Basicly you just run the vents filter along the frame rail to on top the transmission. It keeps the dust out that ruins the solenoid in the first place. But if the code doesnt reset, your good to go! It usually takes a few days and a few warm up cycles.

Probably just couldn't get the port to fit well. its a tight fit. And check the cig ltr fuse.

he said the fuse was blown and he replaced it and it works now

I don't get why they put the two on one fuse,Look how much people use the cig lighter for power.
