New Fly wheel for a stroked 350
I've been reading posts and web articles and I can't seem to find a definitive answer. About 10 years ago I did a new build on my 72 2-bolt with new pistons and rods on a 400 crank. A little clearance on the oil pan rails and it runs really well on pump gas and my older fuelie heads - no complaints.
Here's my dilemma. I used the original flywheel from my 59 with a crank balance weight and a new balancer and then had it all balanced. Love it - it's great, but the starter gear is really beginning to give me problems and wear on the bendix gear. Can I just buy a new aftermarket flywheel that's externally balanced or do I need to find a shop to somehow match the balance of the old one? or should I buy a regular flywheel and use the balancer weight I bought from Summit?

Have a new Ring Gear installed on the original flywheel.

What was said above. You can also look at the old flywheel for drill or grinder marks where they balanced it. If there are none then a replacement flywheel should be fine.

Listen to Cline....do not mess with the balance on that engine! Another trick (old school), was to take the ring gear off, & flip it.....assuming, that there were no teeth completely missing Best of fun, crazy L

From one old geezer to another....Yes I am still here, just spending more time working on the house Do you think that we should talk about welding the teeth back on the ring gear, &chopping them in with a die grinder Shorthorn

Nah!
Too confusing for the ‘let’s just buy a new one’ crowd! Good to see you missed the corona! We been lucky too. Living on a big island helps. We had 129 cases and 3 died. |
