New Guy 61 Apache 10

Howdy from Texas. I picked up this 61 Apache and might have bit off more than I can chew. It needs lots of work but it runs. It didn't have any brakes when I got it but they cleaned up and are working now. There's been a lot of less than professional repairs made that I got to work out but I love the body style and I am excited. Glad to have this forum.

Re: New Guy 61 Apache 10

and Welcome Aboard!!!
Awesome truck to start with... Tons of Great folks out here an a Wealth of info...

If ya can't find something with a search, just ask... There are a bunch of people who are willing to share their knowledge. This board is the reason my build has taken the direction it has. I was gonna build an engine and change to a manual trans... Long Story short, mine is in the rolling chassis stage now, cab is on a stand, bed and front clip are waiting some attention...

anyway, again, welcome aboard, have fun with your build and remember to take lots of pics... for sharing, but mostly for reference material later...

Welcome to the forum

I think a lot of us have had those thoughts of having bit off more than we can chew. I would suggest just focusing on one area at a time, as you did with the brakes. Work on each area until you are at least satisfied for now and move to the next thing. What does really help is if you can keep it running and driving as much as possible.

What's the story on the double hump hoods? I see trucks from 60 to 66 that have them and some do not. Was it an option back then for all years?

Re: New Guy 61 Apache 10

welcome Branman!! dig that truck already! i see the belt off the power steering pump.. is that why they put the suicide/brody knob on the steering wheel? If memory serves... and im sure there are folks with more info than i... those double hump/cat eye hoods were only for the 1960-61-62 trucks with many being replaced after (even by dealerships) with the flat hoods.

Re: New Guy 61 Apache 10

Welcome and nice looking 61 you picked up there. Nice to see its still got the correct hood. You don't see them as much as the 62-66 hoods. Keep us posted on the progress.

And 60-61 mr anderson on the hoods. And GMC had different hood "pods" than the chevies also.

Re: New Guy 61 Apache 10

Sweet ruck! Do the safety things first which you did the most important already. Get it running good and suspension work. Drive it then start on the cosmetic. With my truck I don't care about the cost because I'll be buried in it. lol

Re: New Guy 61 Apache 10

Thanks guys. Installed new kickdown cable and while front was lifted tranny fluid started leaking out of tailshaft of the tranny. Hope that's not a big problem. And mr anderson, I do hope to install power steering on this thing.

Was the driveline out at the time? If so no biggy. If not replace the seal no biggy.
