Re: NJ Suburban

SEM seam sealer looks good! Not sure if I put on too much. Decided to let it run into the seam and find it's own level instead of running my finger along it.

Sorry my computer just does not want to upload things right side up!

Re: NJ Suburban

I re worked the driver side wheel lip area and I’m pretty happy with the results. And once again the pictures are rotated.

If you are taking pics with an iphone Rotate them on your computer and then save them as something else in a different file. From what i have read, even if you rotate and save back as the original file it will still default to the original picture

Burb is coming along nicely

I'll try that Richard. I think these were taken with a camera though. I've spent the last three weeks block sanding.

Re: NJ Suburban

It's been a while since I've posted. For the past 4 months I've been working on the drivers side panel between the drivers door and the wheelwell. It has been really kicking my butt. Yesterday I decided to sand off 4 months of body work and start over. I've got to make the metal straighter first.

Re: NJ Suburban

Man that sucks, Paul. I am just starting in on the heavy stuff on my panel and will have to do same repairs as this. I hope the new patches are better than what you described.

Richard other guys have said the lower patch panel fit fine for them. Hopefully yours will fit correctly. It's weird. As I was applying the filler it looked like I just needed a skim coat. My long ruler showed the panel to be basically flat. It seemed like I was continuously adding more and more filler. When I sanded it all off that's exactly what was there. It looked like rings of a tree. It took hours to remove it all. Now again at bare metal and my long ruler shows it to be basically straight!

The Suburban is coming along slowly. Body work wasn't going well. This time last year I figured I'd have body back on the frame. After working on the drivers side for 7 months late last year I sanded the body down to metal again and rewelded the patch panel for the loooooong drivers side panel. Hundreds of dollars worth of filler and paint went into the shop vac. Things are much better now and hopefully I can make more progress this spring. I'm hoping to be able to wet sand the roof and apply a base/clear white while it is on the rotisserie.

I retired from teaching 2 years ago and I'm busier than ever with a full time maintenance job and working around the house.

No pictures worth sharing. They all look the same. A huge tub on a rotisserie with lots of grey primer on it.

Thanks for the poke guys!

Paul

Re: NJ Suburban

Wow last update was May! Holy crap!

The body work is probably 90% done and I'll finish it off when the body gets put back on the frame. Roof is ready for paint and that will happen after the body gets rolled outside and both the body and garage get a deep cleaning. Now all I have to do is settle on a paint brand!

Re: NJ Suburban

Finally some progress. Painted the firewall/cowl and the roof this past week. Next step is to put the frame back under the body. I was planning on leaving the rotisserie attached to the back and support the front with a wide board like a 2x12 under the roof at the front doors. I'd make piers on either side with concrete block or 6x6 so my heavy duty screw type jack stands are on top.

Re: NJ Suburban

Well this has been a long time coming.
Couple notes:

I used the Energy Suspension 3.4149G 1967-72 CHEV/GMC/.SUBURBAN polyurethane body bushing kit. It was missing several bushings but a call to Energy suspension got them shipped out really quick. Some of the bolts are the wrong style head and length. Research of the bolts shows that they are Grade 5 bolts. Two spots should have carriage bolts not hex head. Grade 5 carriage bolts are something I can get at my local hardware store.

The weirdest thing is that one of the body mount holes does not line up! I used a 68 2wd GMC body and put it on a 70 4wd Chevy frame. All the other body mounts line up. This makes me wonder if in fact the 2wd body is different from the 4wd body. I'll post pics of the difference later. Right now I'm so happy to have the body on the frame!

Nope! Figured it out. The bodies are the same.
